ROUTER 7206VXR does not recognize routes by BGP

Dear Sir,

We are having problems with our core router 72076VXR NPE-G1.

Our router have a BGP routing protocol to propagate internal network and communicate with other external router.

Also, this router have static routes with a different weight to support backup to networks learned by BGP protocol.

For example:

  1. By BGP the router learns the network: 10.16.0.0 / 16 and there is a static route that routes the same network to another cloud as back-up as such: ip route 10.16.0.0 255.255.0.0 250 10.1.140.5
  2. BGP Routing has a weigth of 20 and the router choose this route instead of the static route.

PROBLEM:

The  router is choosing the static route instead of the BGP route and this is producing problems in the network.

Somebody tell us why the router give more preference to static routes instead the BGP routing which has a weight less than static route?

We are annexing the sh ver and routing BGP configuration of the router.

Can it be associated to a BUG Software for the actual IOS?.

First option within the BGP Best Path Algorithm is to select the WEIGHT. Highest WEIGHT is preferred.

By default, when redistributing into BGP the originated route will have a WEIGHT of 32768.

If you want the BGP learned prefix to be preferred over the static route, you need to modify your inbound route-map to set the WEIGHT to a value greater than 32768.

From the output I can see there are several routes with  weight of 250. However, most routes have no weight configured and will hence use the default of 1, which is less than eBGP.

Presumably your problem is with the static routes that do have a weight configured, yes?

In that case, please provide the output sh ip bgp for us in order to verify the bgp routes overruling the statics with w=250 are actually there. A bug is not likely, Cisco's BGP implementation is very stable and mature.

You are confusing the Metric (MED) with the WEIGHT. The WEIGHT is not introduced from the IGP metric.

I was talking about the static routes provided with the starting post.

Some of these have a weight of 250 configured, most are 'normal' static routes.

Ah!, You were referring to Admin Distance, NOT BGP Weight!

Well, I checked your attached files and I don't see a static route for 10.16.0.0/16 hence the BGP route will be chosen.

If you were to add the static route as backup to BGP, this is the command

ip route 10.16.0.0 255.255.0.0 250 10.1.140.5 30

Where 30 is greater than eBGP's AD of 20.

You are rigth.

There is not any static route associated to 10.16.0.0 /16 with a metric of 250.

We erased those static routes because the router choose the static route instead of the BGP route.

if we put again a static route for example:

ip route 10.16.0.0 255.255.0.0 10.1.140.5 30 or

ip route 10.16.0.0 255.255.0.0 10.1.140.5 250

the router will choose those instead of BGP.

This is the problem we are having.

We are planning to reset (power down and power up) the router to erase any unstable behavior of it.

show ip route 10.16.0.0

and

show ip bgp 10.16.0.0
