I am trying to repurpose a 3550-12T. It is currently running: C3550-I5K91L2Q3-M, Version 12.2(25)SEA. I know there are versions out as late as 2009:
Is it worth the effort to update (I like keeping things up-to-date).
Another rookie question here: do I need to purchase the ability to download/install an IOS on a device I have no Smartnet on?
Also, I'm having trouble determining the features of my image. When I key in:

Into: http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/CFN/jsp/SearchBySoftware.jsp
I get this error:

There's likely some feature improvements in the later IOS version (e.g. maybe rapid-pvst exists in the later version but not the earlier). But even if you don't need feature improvements, there's often benefit to update to the last release in the same IOS train to get all the bug fixes.
Technically, believe you need a contract or a new IOS purchase to upgrade the IOS. As the box has long been end-of-everything, suspect you don't have a legal way to acquire the software.
For a definitive answer, you'll need to contact Cisco, but I also suspect unless you're a big customer of Cisco constantly buying new Cisco equipment, they might only recommend you purchase a new 3560X (with a possible trade in allowance).
