hello,
I have issues logging into one of our core switches.
its a 6509 switch but i cannot log in remotely.
when i try to console in on the console port, i cannot log in instead i get the above error message.
I haven't rebooted yet but would it solve the problem as this switch is a production switch.

Sounds like SNMP may be misconfigured someplace. You may need a change window to dive into the config.

Hi Vmiller,
I cannot even log in via console to the switch to check any sort of configs...
when i trying via telnet/ssh it gives remote "connection refused"
so how do i log in to check the configurations

from your description, you will need to take an outage.
I would have a plan in place for a cold start of this device, including a failure to boot.
This is where the TAC comes in real handy.
When did all this start?
What version of the Operating system is running ?
What was the last change?
is there any sort of backup config available? (you do back up your configs, right?)

Hi vmiller,
its been on for like a week now.
version 12.2(33)SXJ1
there have no major change on the switch apart from the IOS upgrade done two months ago.
we do have backup configs
Am not sure i know how to handle a 6509's failure to boot, do you have any suggestions or documentation handy on bringing it up during this scenario?
thanks

At this point, I would strongly suggest opening a TAC case. There are limits to what we can do over an community forum.
I'm thinking worst case basis (never a bad idea in networking). If it were me, I'd do the following:
Schedule an outage (couple hours, minimum)
get a tac case open, there may be a bug involved.
have tac support available when you power cycle the device, have a pc plugged into the console to capture anything.
The switch just might reload normally, but you need to be able to get any failure info in the tacs hands asap.
here is another thread on the same issue on another 6500:
