Stack ios questions

Currently, I have a Cisco switch 9200 in production. My idea is to introduce another Cisco switch 9200 and create a stack.

If I turn off the existing Cisco 9200 switch, add the stack cable to join the new 9200 switch, will the stack set up automatically? Or is it necessary to configure something beforehand?

Previously, I set up a stack of four new switches, and I only had to connect the stack cables, and the stack was created automatically

Another question:

Regarding the IOS, I want to confirm: if the IOS version is not the same on both switches, there was a command to transfer the IOS from one switch to the other, but I can’t find the command.

There are two ways to do this depending on how the exiting is configured.

If the exiting stack configured the switch number and priority, then

1. new switch upgrade the IOS XE to the same as Live one

2. setup the switch number and priority

3. write the configuration -

4. turn off, rack to the right location, connect the stack cables (look at the below guide stack ring) and turn and monitor the boot logs

Other options: if the switch is configured auto upgrade option, when you connect a new switch with stack cables the switch automatically upgrade the switch to the latest version (depends on the models; some model ship with high versions can not be rolled back to the old version. Check the guides)

then change the switch number and priority and reload only the switch module to be corrected.

Thank you, but it’s still not clear to me.

Currently, there is no stack — I only have one switch working alone. I plan to add another switch and create the stack. If I turn off the existing switch, connect the new switch with the stack cable, and then turn on both switches, will the stack form automatically?

 Yes, stack will be formed automatically. Just keep in mind that for that happen, there are some requirements.You can check here

IOS must be the same. On the link above, check "Prerequisites for Switch Stacks"

"All the switches in the switch stack must be running compatible software versions."

First, upgrade the second switch to the same version as the first one and after that, join them with the stack cable.

You can transfer IOS from one switch to another but it does not means the IOS will be installed. You need to go through the process of IOS installation.

After the stack is successfully formed, the next upgrade can be done per stack; dont need to be done per switch.

The current switch is running iOS version 17.6.5, while the new switch is running 17.09.04a.

it is possible to do stack with this 

it is possible to do the satck with those ios witout do upgrade

 They must be running the same IOS version

For example, If one switch were 17.6.5 and another 17.6.6, I would say thats fine but in your case they are quite different

 Put them on the same version is the best option
