One of our supervisors on 6500 platform needs to replaced, as it is faulty. Other supervisor is working fine.

1. In my knowledge, the supervisors are hot swappable. hence we should be able to remove and replace the faulty supervisor on slot5 while the working supervisor in slot6 continues to drive the 6500 functionality, without affecting operations. Is this correct?

2. On the new supervisor, can we just insert the compact flash from current faulty module and copy the IOS from flash to bootdisk: with existing configuration is intact. Is this feasible?

3. if the compact flash were to be kept in a slightly removed position from its store on the supervisor front portion i.e not completely inserted into the flash slot, does this cause    any problems ?

Hi,

Yes, if you have two supervisor enginers installed, hot swapping allows you to remove and replace one of them.

bootflash/bootdisk is the location from where the system can load and boot a Cisco IOS Software image

-bootflash/bootdisk is the flash integrated into the switch.

-flash is external.

Yes, you can use you compact flash to copy your IOS image into the bootdisk.

slightly removed means unplugged so no there is no problem but you check to know if you really have you IOS image on it.

If your switchover havn't occured yet:

what you need to check is your switchover configuration and state, mode,...

sh redundancy state.

Thank You. One more doubt on the same topic. Assume a scenario , one of the supervisor modules gets into rom mode. all attempts to boot it normally fail. If we were to have a compact flash with a different IOS version ( but for the same platform ) and if this flash was inserted into the troubled supervisor, followed by a dir flash: to get the IOS name ( in rom mode ) with a subsequent boot statement indicating different IOS from new flash , will this help the supervisor to boot up normally ?

Hi,

i havn't tried exactly this kind of operation.

But yes it will works fine.

Otherwise You will have to put the same IOS later from the CLI of your active supervisor if you want your switchover to work correctly.

With two different IOS image  your redundancy log will show you something like "IOS missmatch".

Thanks again. Another issue came to my mind. 2 switches on hsrp, standby switch goes to rom mode, all efforts to normalise it fails. is there a way the this switch can be booted using active working IOS of the active switch.

No,

in the HSRP case you can't do that.

You'll have to restore it via a standard method:

*TFTP (if your version allows it)

*copy from compact flash

It depends of the equipement.
