Turning distribution switch into a edge switch

Hello,

I have a 6509 which is currently configured as a distribution switch.  This switch has connections to 2 core's and to 1 other distribution switch.  I'm looking to move the last interface vlan's to the other distribution switch.  Only layer two traffic will be passed to the 6509 switch.  After I move the last of the interface vlan's I want to turn off routing and make it an edge switch.  What is the best procedure for this?  Do I do a "no router ospf xxx" or do I kill the connections to the core's?  The 6509 will still have server's connected to it though but the traffic will only be layer 2 traffic.  I cannot have any downtime on the 6509.

Hi,

after moving your server access VLAN L3 interfaces (SVIs) from this box to your second distribution box, all traffic to servers will be routed on second box and you can shutdown links to core (if something goes wrong, you can unshut) and remove all unnecessary config on this "new" access box.

...and once you're sure eveything is working you can always issue (conf t)#no ip routing

I'm sorry,

The box I want to turn into a edge switch is a 6513 NOT a 6509.  I can't do "no ip routing" on a 6513.

Believe you might not be able to disable routing on a 6500.  If correct, if you just remove or shut down all your VLAN interfaces, except perhaps one for management, the 6500 won't be able to route between VLANs.  I.e., it will just function as a L2 switch.  NB: One exception would be if the one active VLAN interface has secondary addresses.
