I'm unable to configure "vtp mode transparent" on a Cisco 3548-XL switch. It's using IOS c3500XL-c3h2s-mz.120-5.WC3b.bin. The only options under vtp is "file".
switch(config)# vtp ?
file
Please let me know if I have to upgrade the IOS or removing the vlan.dat file. This switch was not properly reset to manufacturer's default. I was given time to reset.

It won't. 2900XL/3500XL does not support extended VLAN.
Extended VLANs support starts with the 2940/2950/2955 using version 12.1(22)EA5 and later.

Very old IOS.
You need to get into 'vlan database' in order to change the VTP mode.
For instance:
switch#vlan data
switch#(vlan)vtp ?

I need the extended VLAN range, I only see 1-1005, is this a hardware limitation?

Yes you can. You have to get into the VLAN database (old-fashion way):
Switch#vlan database
Switch(vlan)#vtp transparent
exit
Hope this helps. Please don't forget to rate useful posts. Thanks.

It doesn't give me VLAN's 1006 to 4094, the range I need.
