Unable to upgrade 9200

Hi,

I am trying to upgrade a catalyst 9200 to 17.9.7. But stuck with flash space issues. Flash is telling me only 650MB is free. Tried install remove inactive, but no luck.

Hi @JAISONTHOMAS,

Have you reviewed the contents of flash: to delete any other unnecessary files that are taking up space? Judging by the output you have posted of 'install remove inactive' it looks like this is not a switch stack. Can you confirm?

How are you trying to upgrade the switch? Are you trying to upgrade through DNAC or an NMS, or are you upgrading via the CLI? If upgrading via the CLI, are you trying to upgrade the switch in Bundle Mode or Install Mode? I am assuming you are trying to upgrade with Install Mode from what I can gather by your post.

Check dir flash: from privileged-exec mode for any large files that need removing. At the bottom of the output will also show you the amount of space in bytes that are free. If you are looking at a switch stack, make sure you check each individual stack member's flash with dir flash-1: and dir flash-2: etc. Delete any unused files and try again.

If you are still having problems, upgrade the switch by using Bundle Mode first and then switch to Install Mode. Bundle Mode uses less system flash space due to its monolothic nature, rather than using individual packages which are pre-extracted for booting.

For example:
conf t
 no boot system
 boot system flash:<IOS_file_name.bin>
 end

(or use boot system switch all flash:<IOS_file_name.bin>) if upgrading a switch stack.

When the switch is reloaded, you can issue the 'install remove inactive' command again which should delete the old IOS files. Then you can go through the steps to put this switch in Install Mode, which will require another reboot. Again, this should work as Bundle Mode consumes less resources than Install Mode.

If you are still having problems with free space, there is one thing we can do to get you upgraded. You can boot the existing IOS in bundle mode and then when it is reloaded, delete all packages of Install Mode using 'install remove inactive'. I can help with this method if you are still having issues.

Alternatively, contact TAC who will be able to help free up space. This can sometimes happen and requires shell access to remove large files.

Hi @JAISONTHOMAS,

You will need to go through the file system and check the contents within any directories to see if there any large files that you can remove. You can use commands like 'dir flash: sizesort' and dir flash:<directory_name/> to check the contents of said directories. 'show file systems' will also help you to narrow down anything using flash space.

Alternatively, if that takes too long and downtime can be scheduled without impacting live operations, do you have a file server (e.g. TFTP/SFTP) that you can use to copy the new IOS-XE.bin file to the switch? If so, copy the 17.9.7 image to the switch manually via CLI. Once done, issue the following commands:

1. Set boot statement to Bundle Mode

conf t
 no boot system
 boot system flash:<New_IOS-XE_file_name.bin>
 end
wr

2. Reload the switch.

3. Once switch has booted, issue 'install remove inactive'

4. Now issue 'install add file flash:<New_IOS-XE_file_name.bin>' to convert it to Install Mode which will require another reboot. Or leave it in bundle mode. Do note that leaving a switch running in bundle mode does result in higher

Try this:

And then execute Install Mode again.

The initial commands to clear out guest shell can be done without any downtime. 

Upgrading the firmware, however, will require a downtime.
