Upgrade 4510R to what?

                I need to start budgeting for the replacement of the 4510R due to end of life in a year or so. I have dual Sup V-10GEs. Should I upgrade the chassis to a 4510R+E model or go to something completly different?

It depends on a lot current and future requirements, like port density, bandwidth, PoE support, provided services, media type, etc.

Can you give more specific data?

Hi Andras,

We do have Cisco phones and Access Points on the switch, here are all the cards in the system

2 WS-X4516-10GE

3 WS-X4548-GB-RJ45

4 WS-X4548-GB-RJ45V

2 PWR-C45-4200ACV

I just need newer, faster, etc,etc.

The question I have is would it be better to stay in the 4500 series or switch to 4500-X or 3750-X instead.

If you want to stay with the 4500, then upgrade to the 4500R+E, HOWEVER, ask your Cisco SE for the release date of the Sup8E.

If you want to go 3750X, then I'd recommend you look into the 3850 as Cisco is trying to sell these (same price as the 3750X).

I was thinking if I stayed with the 4500 series, there could be a three phase upgrade.

1. the chassis to a 4510R+E( my extisting Sup. power supply and line cards all will work in the upgraded chassis)

2. the Supervisors to a Sup 7E( either done at the same time as the chassis or later)

3. the line cards to the 48 Gbps models

This would spread out the cost over two or three budget years.

Or just start buying 3850s to slowly replace the 4510

Ummmm ... Kindly disregard my recommendation regarding the 3850 for the following reason:

1.  It's cheaper to get a 4500R+E with supervisor card instead of getting ten 3750X or 3850 and get them into a stack.

2.  Currently, 3850 can only stack to 4.  Future release will go up to 9.
