Virtual Stackwise not Synchronizing

dannyh

Level 1

Hello,

Recently I was advised on this forums to switch over to Virtual Stackwise from HSRP on the Core Switches we have running on the network. I have deleted all of the HSRP configurations and wiped the switch that is going to be the standby switch (call it Core Switch 2).

So far I have configured interfaces on both Core Switch 1 and 2 to have the SVL. DAD cannot be in place for the moment due to the physical limitation between the buildings (Core Switch 1 and 2 are in separate buildings for power redundancy). I have Configured the Switch Virtual-Stackwise and it's domain (101). I have prioritized Core Switch 1 to be 15 and renumbered and reprioritized Core Switch 2 as Switch 2 and Priority 14.

The issue is that when the connection between the switches are made, they are not synchronizing. I see Core Switch 2 displaying both interfaces numbered ten1/0/1 - 40 and ten2/0/1 - 40. I see in Core Switch 2's 'show switch' command that the switch 1 has no mac address but Core Switch 2 does. But in Core Switch 1, I only see Core Switch 1 in 'show switch' and I don't see interfaces ten2/0/1 - 40 like I do in Core Switch 2.

I tried to save and reload the switches multiple times and redo the configurations. What can I do in order to get these two switches synchronized where Core Switch 1 and 2 are sharing configurations (same control plane) like how Cisco documents are saying? Switches in use are Cisco Catalyst 9500 40 ports. I have checked the licensing, models, and the IOS and they are all same between the switches.

Oh no, look like we have the 9500-40X models. So even if we get the module for the extended interfaces, we can't form SVL between the switches?

It appears to be so, but I would also open a ticket with TAC and make sure that is actually the case.

You need to post the config, show version for us to verify. (Once SVL  build switch will reboot, standby one you can not enter any commands at all (in your case different as you mentioned)

Follow exactly below guide it works :  (just make sure you go with latest verison 17.6.X)

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-9000/nb-06-cat-9k-stack-wp-cte-en.html

here is my test setup :

Hi,

What is the output of "show stack-virtual and show stack-virtual link"?

Also, you can post "sh run"?

Restrictions for Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series Switches

  • When configuring StackWiseVirtual links (SVLs) on 9500-40X and C9500-16X models of the Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series Switches, note that you cannot create SVLs on any of the network modules.

  • 4x10G breakout cables are not supported with SVL mode.

Restrictions for Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series High Performance Switches

  • 4x25G and 4x10G breakout cables are not supported with SVL mode.

  • On C9500-32C switches, you can configure SVL and DAD only on interfaces numbered 1-16 on the front panel of the switch.

  • On C9500-32QC, you can configure SVL and DAD only on native 100G and 40G interfaces (default configuration ports). You cannot configure SVL and DAD on converted 100G and 40G interfaces.

  • On Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series High Performance Switches, configuring SVL using 1G interfaces is not supported.

Oh no, look like we have the 9500-40X models. So even if we get the module for the extended interfaces, we can't form SVL between the switches?

Thank you for your assistance. I was so caught up on trying to fix the issue that I didn't look into the capabilities of the switches we have.

Sure! When I was going through your config, I remembered that there are some limitations on these boxes and had seen a few posts where people were trying to configure the VSL links and it wasn't working for them.

Good luck and let us know if you have more questions.
