VLAN switchport mode access on 877

I'm having real trouble getting a working configuration on a Cisco 877 that is to be used for sharing an ADSL connection between two small offices.

The offices will use seperate vlans, 192.168.31.0/24 (vlan1) and 192.168.99.0/24 (vlan2).

I have two cheap Netgear switches, one connected to FE1 (default vlan1) and the other to FE2, where I have issued...

interface FastEthernet2

switchport access vlan 2

switchport mode access

Running 'show ip inter brief' always shows the 'Status' and 'Protocol' as down.

My config is attached, if anyone has any useful suggestions.

Hi

As per the datasheet it supports 4 Vlans with advanced ipservices image.

Would suggest to check whether the other end is up and live.

Thanks for the reply.

The other end (a 5 port Netgear switch) is up and fine.

If I didn't connect a switch, and just connected my laptop directly into the FE2 port, would the configuration need to change?

I notice that when I issue..

switchport mode access

... on the FE2 interface, it does not stay visible when viewing the running config - is this normal?

Will you please issue the following commands:

vlan database,

vlan 2,

exit,

and see if there is any improvement.

I entered those commands, but it did not improve the situation.

The FE2 light /led on the front of the router is illuminated, but the IOS shows the status and port as down.
