Hi;

First if you want to configure the VSS on standalone catalyst 6509, your catalyst 6509 supervisor should support VSS (Part # start from VS-).

To configure the VSS you need downtime. Once you convert your switch into VSS, it will loss all the configuration and you need to redo configuration of switch.

Logically your 2 physical switches become single virtual switch and your Switch-1 module start from G1/X/X & Switch-2 module start from G2/X/X.

Thanks & Best regards;

Besides needing a VSS capable sup (i.e. the VS-S70 or the sup2T), be aware line cards are more limited than those that will work in non-VSS mode.

You should find all the documentation you need Cisco's main web site.

Hello Joseph,

I have the following supervisor vs s720 10g / s72033_rp-IPSERVICESK9_WAN-M / Version 12.2(33)SXH.

My question is, will I loose all the config on the working devices?

Thanks.!

I'm unsure as I've never set up a VSS pair from scratch.

However, I would suspect you'll lose the whole config at least on the switch being added to the VSS pair.  Also, if you don't lose the whole config on the "original" VSS device, interfaces are renamed to reflect which of the two VSS boxes the interface resides.  So, you'll likely, minimally, lose that part of a config too.

Hi all

I have the last question this is the

Cisco IOS Software, s72033_rp Software (s72033_rp-IPSERVICESK9_WAN-M), Version 12.2(33)SXH4, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(17r)SX5, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)"

should I update the IOS version ?

thanks.

Hi;

To configure the VSS you need to convert your standalone switch to VSS mode. which will lose all your configuration.

With reference to configure VSS:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/15-1SY/config_guide/sup720/15_1_sy_swcg_720/virtual_switching_systems.html

With reference to VSS Q&A:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-6500-virtual-switching-system-1440/prod_qas0900aecd806ed74b.html

With reference to Module & Interface starts:

Take example you have 2 Catalyst 6509E fully loaded chassis.

Port # start with GX/Y/Z:

Where X = Chassis no. (i.e 1-2)

Where Y = Module no. (i.e 1-9)

Where Z = Interface no. (i.e 1-48)

Now Gigabit interface 1 on module 1 on Chassis-1/Switch-1 will be G1/1/1.

Gigabit interface 20 on module 8 on Chassis 2/switch-2 will be G2/8/20

Thanks & Best regards;
