Cannot Login to License Count Utility

Matthew Martin

Hello All,

License Count Utility: 9.1(2)
CallManager: 10.5(2)SU3

I am trying to login to our CUCM from the License Count Utility for the first time, but I cannot seem to login. I really only know of 2 usernames that we use for administration purposes. The one I use for Unified CM Administration and another for OS Adminsitration and CLI.

Is there supposed to be a special username that I am supposed to use to login to CUCM through the License Count Utility?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks in Advance,
Matt

Hi Matt,

I have never come across this situation. You can contact licensing team with PLM report along with SO but chances are dim  since we need to have LCU report which gives breakup of user licenses.

If u have not made any major changes in CUCM10 after upgradation to 8 , u can roll back only PUB to 8 in maintenance window and run LCU report.

May be u are trying to run LCU on CUCM 10 , it won't be running.

Hi Matt,

You need to use OS username and password for LCU 9.1 if you are using Call manager 8 0r below which had DLUs.

Are u migrating to call manager 10.5?

Hey Aman, thank you for the reply.

When you say OS username, are you referring to the user you'd use to login to Cisco Unified OS Administration? If not, is there a way to list the users through cli, maybe a "run sql ..." command?

Yes, we just upgraded from 8.6 to 10.5 over this past weekend for CUCM and Unity Connection. And I need to get onto the utility so I can get our CUCM licenses migrated over to 10.5.

Thanks Again for the reply,

-Matt

Hi Matt,

Yes, I am referring to OS Adminsitration credentials which u use to login through putty to get CLI mode.

LCU needs to be run prior to upgrading to Call Manager or u have upgraded but did not switch over to CUCM 10.

Hey Aman, thanks again for the reply.

Ok, I was unaware that you needed to run that utility before you upgrade as I have already upgraded over this past weekend. Is there no way to figure out the licensing after you have been upgraded?

Maybe the license files live somewhere on the CUCM and I can grab them to send to the Cisco Licensing team..?

Also, I have tried using the OS Admin credentials (*which are the same creds I use for CLI) with no luck.

Thanks Again,

Matt

Hey Aman,

Ok, I was afraid you'd say that about rolling-back. Does rolling back cause you to loose data?

So the reason I cannot login to the License Count Utility at this time is because CUCM is running on version 10.x..?

-Matt

I raised the point : since changes made in CUCM 10 won't get copied on CUCM 8.

In your case, u can simply take downtime for PUB and run LCU report , share it with Licensing team to get permanent licenses .You also need to share PLM request file

Ok, I don't think I have made any real changes since we upgraded this past weekend. So we might be ok on that front. I assume that when you roll-back the CUCM Licenses for 8.6 will still be present on the currently "inactive" version of CUCM, and the old/original license mac will be present?

Would you be able to provide a link to any documentation that pertains to Rolling-back CUCM from 10.5 to 8.6? Just to be sure I don't miss anything that I'm supposed to do before I roll-back the Publisher.

Could you confirm if this is correct below and possibly add what I might be missing:

  1. From Cisco PCD Schedule a new "Switch-Version" Task for ONLY the CallManager Publisher.
  2. Once the Switch-Version has completed, run the License Count Utility and save the Report generated from the LCU for the CUCM Pub.
  3. Then, Schedule another Switch-Version in Cisco PCD for the Publisher Node ONLY, back to v10.5.
  4. After the Switch-Version task completes the switch-over back to version 10.5, log into Cisco Prime License Manager on the Publisher and do the following:
  • In Cisco PLM go to: Licenses > Fulfillment
  • In License Fulfillment click: Other Fulfillment Options > Migrate Licenses
  • Product Type: Choose Unified CM as the Product and 10.x as Version > Click Next
  • Choose Product Instances: Select the CUCM Publisher > Click Next
  • License Counts: Estimate the Number of Public Space Phones > Then Upload the output file (*.zip file) from the License Count Utility > Click Next
  • Summary and Next Steps: Then fill-in remaining items > And then Generate the Report.
  • Lastly, upload the report to Cisco licensing team...

One question regarding the one required item when filling out the info in Cisco PLM... How accurate do you need to be, or how important is the "Public Space Phones" item?

Thanks again for your help, very much appreciated.

Thanks Again,
Matt

Hi Matt,

you can switch the "utils switch version " command from CLI of PUB to switch to CUCM 8 and then, run LCU

In PLM, I suggest to generate the PLM request file and share with licensing team.

For Public Space licenses, u need to have UCL depending on the phone model from CUCM 9 onwards.

So, I was able to retrieve the license Mac of CUCM prior to the Upgrade by searching through the inactivelog partition.

I found the Old License MAC in the following file:

License Mac found under "inactivelog" in the file:
       */cm/trace/licensing/log4j/LicenseMacLogs
*Command to show the License MAC: # file search inactivelog cm/trace/licensing/log4j/LicenseMacLogs "License Mac" Searching path: /var/log/inactive/cm/trace/licensing/log4j/LicenseMacLogs Searching file: /var/log/inactive/cm/trace/licensing/log4j/LicenseMacLogs [14/07/20_15:05:00] /usr/local/bin/base_scripts/LicenseMac.sh: License Mac is *** [14/07/20_15:05:09] /usr/local/bin/base_scripts/LicenseMac.sh: License Mac is *** [14/08/03_13:05:09] /usr/local/bin/base_scripts/LicenseMac.sh: License Mac is *** [14/08/03_13:05:16] /usr/local/bin/base_scripts/LicenseMac.sh: License Mac is *** [14/08/22_22:39:19] /usr/local/bin/base_scripts/LicenseMac.sh: License Mac is *** [14/08/22_22:39:25] /usr/local/bin/base_scripts/LicenseMac.sh: License Mac is ***

So luckily, thanks to that file, I did NOT have to switch-versions in order to get the License Mac, and TAC helped me with getting a usage count without the LCU program...

Thanks Again,

Matt
