CUCM 8.6.2 upgrade to CUCM 9.1.1a license requirements

                   Hello guys!

I am in the process of upgrading a CUCM 8.6.2.20000-2 and a CUCxN 8.6.2.20000-76 to version 9.1.1a. Both systems are working perfectly and are licensed. I have the following questions:

1. I know that in version 9.x of Uniffied Communications the ELM was introduced and licenses are managed differently. When upgrading from 8.6.2 to 9.1.1a, does licenses need to be manually re-hosted, migrated or during the upgrade process licenses will be automatically migrated to the new version?

2. Does current configuration of both systems will not be affected by this upgrade? (I know is always good to make a full backup of the system before any kind of upgrade).

3. Does ELM will be automatically installed during the upgrade?

Thanks in advanced guys!

1 they will be migrated, but you need to do the process manually. Its not automatic, it forcefully requires user involvement as you need to get some of the data into the licensing web page to get the new 9.x licenses.

2 same as any other upgrade

3 yes, its installed along with UC 9 products, you need to choose which one you'll use before doing the license migration.

Excellent. Thanks Jaime!

Hi Santos,

In addition to what  to Mr. Jaime has said, u can also refer this URL which is Operational guide for migration and ELM.It is useful.

Nephtali,

In addition to all the great additions here..

In order to license the new version, you will require ELM.

The ELM (Enterprise License Manager) will be installed together with the CUCM 9 software.

Please see here for the user guide of this software:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/elmuserguide/9_0_1/CUCM_BK_E596FD72_00_

The overall process is as follows:

  1. Make sure your licensed features are applied on the current servers 2. You upgrade (remember, the upgrade installs automatically ELM) 3. At this point, your new software will run for a grace period of 60 days, with no license installed 4. You run the ELM (see user guide above) 5. You generate the license request on the ELM (see sections starting on page 26 of 50 in the referred document) 6. Then you take the resulting file and you run it through the online tool (Cisco License Registration site) to generate a new license:

    a. Visit cisco.com/go/license

    b. Click on the "Get New" tab

    c. Select "Migration License"

    d. Click on "Cisco Unified Communications 9.0"

This document anwers all your questions I believe..
