I am having trouble changing the Caller ID (ANI) on CUCM 12.5 for a specific phone. I was successful when changing it for an entire Route Pattern using "Calling Party Transform Mask" however for just one DN (Directory Number) it will not work. Steps I've taken:
1. In the route patterns used, I checked the box (see image attached) to "Use Calling Party's External Phone Number Mask".
2. In the Directory Number, I entered the ANI I want displayed externally into "External Presentation Number". (See images attached. I want the displayed ANI to be XXXXX99 while the real ANI is XXXXX98).

It sounds like you are not using the 'external number mask' on the DN. Why not? That is another way that you could do this and certainly allows for customization by DN.

For some added context, I don't use a SIP trunk but instead a voice gateway to a legacy T1 switch then to the PSTN.

Check that you don’t have any number manipulation further down the line in the path to the gateway, for example on the route list/route group level, as that will override any manipulation you do on the route pattern level.

@Roger Kallberg makes a great point here. There are multiple places where calling party information can be manipulated. Any manipulations done on the route pattern or translation pattern happen prior to that information being seen by the route lists or the gateway/SIP trunk. I generally stay away from doing calling party manipulation there for that reason. If you need changes that vary by internal calling extension, I think you will need to do that with calling party transformations in a unique partition by extension and apply the CSS that points at that partition as the calling party transformation CSS where the call exits your network.

Thank you, I didn't see that option. I searched for it before, and I guess my glasses need to be checked. I was in the middle of typing this response and screenshotting my DN page, saying my version didn't seem to have it, and that's when I found it. I'm humbled haha. Thank you Mr. Dierksen and Mr. Kallberg

Ok, I knew I wasn't crazy. This is why I couldn't see it before:
It can only be accessed by modifying the DN after clicking on the phone. The external number mask option is phone+DN specific NOT just DN specific.
So; you have to click Phones > Name: SEP1234567890ab > Line 1: 1234 > "external number mask"
If you just click Phones > DN: 1234 > No Option for "external number mask".
See attached images. (cisco1: phone search page. cisco2: clicked on MAC > Line 1. cisco3: clicked directly on DN.)

To be super specific, external phone number is a "line appearance" setting, not a "directory number" setting. That means (as you obviously figured out) where the DN is assigned to a particular line position on a particular device. The line appearance settings can be different for the same DN if it appears on multiple devices.

On that point. Is there a good way to learn CUCM in depth? I'm looking at the CCNP Collab, but is there a course that could help me with these basics prior to that?

I would probably look at one of the Cisco Press books on that subject. That might also help you get ready for CCNP Collab. I was looking for some specific books on that, but they might not be available any longer.
