Lack of support for ATA187 in CUCME and UC560

Very frustrated that the ATA186 has been withdrawn from sale while support for the ATA187 is so patchy. This is giving us real problems with a few UC projects we're currently working on. There are no ATA186s in the channel, grey market or Ebay (yes we really are that desperate!). The ATA187 is not presently supported by either CUCME or UC500 platforms. There are lots of people on support forums asking what they're supposed to do, and the answers posted by Cisco staff are pretty lame. The suggested alternative, the VG202, is three times the price (why?) so is not a viable option where projects have been priced up based on the cheaper technology.

I just can't understand how the product manager/department concerned can have allowed a situation to arise where you stop making something before there is a like-for-like alternative in place, in the process creating stress, anxiety, extra work and costs for the entire reseller community.

Can I suggest that until such time as there is proper support available for the ATA187, including sample configurations, you either reinstate the ATA186 or let us buy the VG202 at the same price as the ATA186/187?

In the meantime, if anyone has any work-arounds we would be very grateful.

Hi,

I understand your frustration, I'm not sure why the ATA was not built with support for CME since the very beginning but I can tell you that if you want to see support for this device on the next release you need to contact your AM so he/she can open a PER (product enhancement request) for you, or add your case to an existing one (if any), the more people are listed on the PER, or if there is a strong business case, the sooner you will get support for that endpoint on CME.

Thanks for your reply - I will ask our AM to raise a PER as you suggest.

It's hardly an enhancement. It should be self-evident to the people in charge of such things that a phone system without adequate provision for faxes, etc. might be a bit of a problem!

At the point of withdrawing the ATA186 from sale, and releasing the ATA187 with only CUCM support, surely someone must have asked 'what are those with CUCMEs and UC560s going to do?'. To which presumably they answered ' Oh, that's OK they can use the VG202'. 'But that's three times the price - surely that will be a problem' replies small voice of reason. 'Oh don't worry, I'm sure all the resellers who quoted based on the ATA won't mind. They're used to this sort of thing - we stitch them up all the time.'

Please continue with you per request. I heard from the CME team  that "ATA 187 will be supported with CME 9.0  ( ETA nov 2011)"

In reply to my own rant, after a lot of last-minute messing about our techies came up with a solution using the Linksys PAP2T ATA, which seems to do the same job as the old ATA186. The PAP2T is cheaper than the original ATA186 and its replacements the ATA187 and VG202, so I would suggest anyone having similar issues explores the Linksys option. We'll probably stick with the PAP2T now we've got it working.

Thank You for sharing this information.
