If you disable the auto registration, when you plug new phones it wont register automatically. The number taken will be from the range defined and you can see the next number which system will release if any phone connect with CUCM. There is no production impact disabling this as it wont affect any registered phones.

I can see there is 2 ways to disable auto, one is from checkBox the option, and another one to keep uncheckBox and specify DN on both start/end to be same DN, can you clarify what's the difference between them?

If I understand you correctly the second option would not actually disable auto registration, it would either allow one phone to register with one number or allow an unlimited amount of phones to register with the same number on all. In general auto registration is something that you would want to turn off as it’s a security concern as it lets any phone to register. This opens up to rogue devices to gain access to your phone system.

It mentioned on cisco documentation "You can also disable autoregistration by setting the Starting Directory Number and Ending Directory Number to the same value." So I am wondering if this method different than explicitly disable auto registeration

this activity doesn't effect current phones, it is safe to do on production

You might be correct. It’s been many years since I used auto registration. As @Nithin Eluvathingal wrote disabling this has no impact on currently registered devices.

If you keep both starting and end number same you will receive below warning. The option to disable is by unchecking,
