The customer has old CallManager v5 system with about 200 7906 phones and about 40 7940 phones. We are hired to replace that system with new CUCM v11. The problem is that their business highly relies on telephone communication 24/7 and their request is to do a migration of sort, so that there is almost no downtime(few hours at most). Firmwares on 7906 phones are old(8.0), and they have to be upgraded to intermediate version and then to the latest of 9.x, which is on CUCM.
Is it possible to install CUCM in the same network as CallManager and make a SIP trunk between those two and then, with digit manipulation, partially migrate phones from old to new system?
If that is not possible, the problem is that they have a 10+ branch offices and it wouldn't be possible to upgrade all phones at the same time and then register them to the new CUCM. Phones that would be registered to the new CUCM won't be able to communicate with the ones from the old CM and that is a big problem. What would be the best option then?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Firstly, You can upgrade 7906 and 7940 phones to latest firmware available on Call Manager 5.
a, for 7906, u can upgrade to 8.5(2) from 8.0 and then , finally upgrade to 9.4
b. for 7940, u can upgrade to 8.1(2)_SR2 from 8.0
you can try the above for one phone model using Phone Load Name [upgrade firmware individually].
If u succeed, then, u can try upgrading firmware for all IP phones on CUCM 5.
c.. From CUCM 5, using BAT , u can Export phones
d. You can do the installation of CUCM 11 in non-production setup with similar credentials like IP address, Hostname /DNS and download the BAT for phones , copy the parameters being used in CUCM 5 [step c] manually and then, Insert Phones in CUCM 11.It is a tedious process.

Yes, you can setup a SIP trunk between these two cucm clusters.

Well not same IP adresses/hostname settings, but different. And then register set of phones to new CUCM and make them talk through SIP trunk with other phones and vice versa.

That would work but how would you migrate the config from 5.x to 11.x if you install 11.x with a diff IP. The path from 5.x to 11.x should be to first upgrade to 6.1.5 or 7.1.3 and then use PCD to migrate to 1.x to preserve the config. Without following this path you will lose the existing 5.x config. When upgrading to 11.x from 6.1.5 or 7.1.3 via PCD you have the option to changing IP and it is called network migration, PCD admin guide has the details.

Manish, I basically copied the config from CM5 to CUCM11. All I have to do is associate users with phones for licensing.

If that part is done and IP addr are not conflicting then it should work.

It seems that u have already most of the config in CUCM11.
Yes, u need to associate owner user id with respective phones.

Hi,
I do not think using same IP address with SIP Trunk would work.
other option is : if u are using DHCP for IP phones, install new CUCM11 with separate IP address and change the same in DHCP pool with new TFTP IP and register phones. Later on, u can change IP /GW to old IP of CUCM5.
this would save time.

As Aman said two clusters / cucm's with same IP / hostname settings can not be on the same network. How will a phone , subscriber or gateway decide which server to talk to in that case if servers from two cluster are available with same credentials.
