Add vNIc to Template

Hello,

i have to add a new vNIC to my ESXi Template.

1. I created a vNIC Template for the new vNIC

2. I want to add the vNIC to my Service Template.

By clicking ok i get the following warning message

This will trigger PCIe re-provisioning of vNICs/vHBAs devices. As a result, PCIe addresses or Adapter Placement of vNICs/vHBAs will change across Host Reboot

What does this mean? Are the adapter getting new mac and wwpns wwns? And is the order different to what it is now?

How to prevent a new order after rebooting or activating the changes to my blades?

Thanks

Frank

If you have an adapter placement policy in place and you have not added your new vNIC to this policy, you will receive this message. There will not be new WWPN, MAC, etc assigned.

Take a look at this for more info:

Hi,

i did not have an adapter placement policy in place. See picture.

Hi Mueller,

I'm not sure if you saw my last post, is this server in production right now?

What is the blade model / Adapter Model?

What will happen is the VMNIC on the operating system will be mapped differently to your VNIC on the hardware.

Example:

Before Change:

VNIC 0 --> VMNIC 0 Currently

After change:

VNIC 0 --> VMNIC 1

The VNIC hardware components will not change (WWPN, MAC, etc...) but the mapping to the operating system will be different.

Hi Mueller,

To add on with what Wes was mentioning, if you already have an operating system (EX: Vmware 6.0) and you are trying to add VNICs it may change the order of the VMNIC on the operating system side.

EX: Before the change VNIC 0 --> VMNIC0, After the Change VNIC 0 --> VMNIC1. The mapping will be different by the hardware components (MAC + WWPN) will be the same.

Be very careful before rebooting because then the changes will be applied.

As a pro-active step in order to avoid the problem before adding or removing interfaces, choose to manually order and place the vNICs instead of letting the system place it automatically

This can be done from the Service profile -> Network -> Modify vNIC/vHBA placement -> Specify Manually (for Select Placement)

For existing configuration, place the vNICs manually according to the current order that they are placed to avoid triggering any re-ordering

This may be your best option.
