Re: Intel P4510 Drive sets Fans to maximum - C220M5

We added Intel P4510/2TB Drives on three C220M5 as a second drive. (The first ones are P4500 2TB)

Performance is very good, but the fans spun up to maximum speed and stayed there. Power Policy "balanced"

is applied with "success", but without any change on the fans. Load ist very low and temperatures are below 28C.

I would like to have the fans back to normal operation. Any Hints?

All three servers showing same behavior? What is the RPM showing on CIMC? I believe you mean fan control policy?

Power Policy "balanced"

What is showing on "Applied Fan Policy field"?

Yes, all three servers are identical. Rpm between 22000 and 25000.

CIMC -> Compute -> Power Policies

One thing to mention:

The CIMC->Storage Section shows a "moderate Fault" on the nvme-U.2 Drives.

The P4510 drives are not (yet?) recognized by the BIOS. The system itself is green.

So far logs are clean. Drive assert message is expected one. Only thing i can see is, disk S3610 480 GB, sata is not present in supported list.

Is it possible for you to remove sata disk as see if fan speed goes down?

The sata S3610 drive is there from the start. I did a test: When removing the P4510 the

fans go down to 15k. After inserting back in, the fans go up to 25k.

The P4510 is not in the document as well, there's just a P4500 mentioned. (But Intel switched to a new gen of drives.)

The "unkown card PCI Id" mentioned in the log is for the P4500!

this logs were not there in the previous attachment, however pci-id was present. AND if the drive is not present in spec sheet, its NOT supported.

This is mysterious:

The shown PCI-ID is for the older and thus supported drive.

AND

The fan policy is forced to "balanced" which should not be the "maximum"-Setting.

Any other hints?

I don't have tech-support logs, else I could have confirmed you which PCI-ID is pointing to what disk. You can check though on your end-

collect-show-tech --> open tar file --> /var --> server_inventory.txt file --> Take out the below IDs

Eg.

VendorID: 0x10df
DeviceID: 0xe200
SubVendorID: 0x10df
SubDeviceID: 0xe280

"Balanced" policy never gets applied after seeing unsupported PCI device.

Here are my IDs:

(VendorID-DeviceID-SubVendorID-SubDeviceID)

Good one: Intel P4500, 2TB: 0x8086-0x0a54-0x8086-0x4702

Bad one: Intel P4510, 2TB: 0x8086-0x0a54-0x8086-0x4802

I digged a little deeper: It seems that the "virtual sensor" for temp

on this NVMe-Disk is reporting wrong:

:rfc_virtual_sensor.c:rfc_read_virtual_sensor:1660: Updated VIRTUAL_NVME_TEMP. [Sensor Reading: 80 (0x50)]

The disk does not report this value itself. (tested with linux distro)

Due to bug: https://bst.cloudapps.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCvj21242/?reffering_site=dumpcr , default policy was changed to "Low power" by default.

What exactly this model is? (UCSC-220-M5SX, UCSC-220-M5SN,UCSC-220-M5L). You have both the drives in slot1 & 2?

Please give me below output from CIMC ssh:

Server /sensor # show temperature
