Hi

We are migrating from 2012 R2 HV on another blade solution to 2016 HV with Cisco UCS and both are new to us. We found very interesting and helpful forum on Hyper V (2012 R2) on UCS (https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/24f8dd51-07db-41c4-a964-1031bd519d1f/deploying-hyper-v-on-cisco-ucs-converged-networking-in-vmm-or-on-hardware?forum=winserverhyperv). Howevevr we need some clarification / reference on below topics:

a) How many vNICs (with UCS) do we need to configure for HV 2016. Currently with HV 2012 R2, we use converged NICs (OS level), and using converged adapters for Management, Live Migration, CSV and for VMs (Virtual Switch). Shall we follow the same number of virtual adapters by creating vNICs at UCS level for HV 2016?

b) Since we use 10 Gb/s NICs we will configure settings for VMQ on vNIC (for VMs) at UCS level. Do we get specific settings for VMQ to be mentioned with vNIC, also do we need to configure any setting at OS / HV level for these NICs specific to VMQ?

c) Looking for BIOS specific setting to be mentioned with BIOS policy on UCS for HV.

d) We never worked / looked into the details of SRIOV, does it required to be configured with HV / Cisco UCS

e) Which are the other parameters like RSS to be enabled / disabled with vNICs at UCS / OS leveL

f) We use FC connectivity to MDS switches, is there any specific setting vHBAs to configured for HV

g) We failed to get a Cisco Validated design for Hv2016 on UCS, can someone help to get it

Hope we will get a clarity from a Cisco UCS / HV admin

Thanks in advance

This document should give you an idea of how to configure it on the UCS side:

FlexPod Datacenter with Microsoft Hyper-V Windows Server 2016

Thank You, will update you once we go through the complete documentation. It's a helpful doc

Hi

The provided link was helpful, but still we stuck with VMQ configuration part (nothing mentioned with the CVD), so again asking the same Q:

b) Since we use 10 Gb/s NICs we will configure settings for VMQ on vNIC (for VMs) at UCS level. Do we get specific settings for VMQ to be mentioned with vNIC, also do we need to configure any setting at OS / HV level for these NICs specific to VMQ?

Since I didn't find anything specific for VMQ policy on CVD for Hyper V 2016, does this mean VIC 1340 is not supported for VMQ policy? Even Cisco support is saying they won't provide VMQ policy support on VIC 1340!!

Hi,
As per Cisco's official documentation, currently VMQ is not supported on Windows 2016 for the latest version of UCS:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/unified_computing/ucs/ucs-manager/GUI-User-Guides/Network-Mgmt/3-2/b_UCSM_Network_Mgmt_Guide_3_2/b_UCSM_Network_Mgmt_Guide_3_2_chapter_01001.html#d6927e6279a1635

check: Network-related policies-> Configuring VMQ Connection Policies

It appears that 2016 is now supported:

The following are the supported Operating Systems for VMQ:

  • Windows 2012
  • Windows 2012R2
  • Windows 2016
