Remove local disk

Hello,

 

we have a service profile for our esxi host that contains a local disk configuration RAID0. But we are not using the disk because of boot from san. 

I wan´t to remove the disk configuration to physicaly remove the disks from the blade. 

Is that possible to only change the local disk configuration to "no disk policy"?

1. Change the settings in the SP Template

2. Disassociate the first Server 

3. shutdown the server

4. Remove Hard Drive

5. Power up server, discovery

4. Associate SP to this blade

5. Next Server same steps

 

I would check this procedure very carefully on a test server ! I'm 100% convinced that this preserves all the pool values, in particular the pwwn/nwwn used for your zoning.

Yes !

To remove the disk the blade has to be taken off line; I would disassociate the SP first, and do a proper shutdown; then after remova of the disk, associate SP again, and everything should work as before (eg. boot from SAN); remember, as long as the SP exists (associated or disassociated), the mac, pwwn, nwwn, UUID's remain reserved.

is it also possible to clone the SP Template and make the changes in the clone to preserve the existing one?

Are the mac, pwwn, nwwn and UUID´s also the same?

Q. Do you updating templates ?

Q. are your pools using sequential access ?

Q. do you have a maintenance policy "ack"

1)Be aware, that if you create a new SP, it will get new mac, pwwn,nwwn,UUID. pwwn, nwwn is used in your zoning, therefore this is a no go !

2) Therefore you have to conserve your SP, simply modifying it. 

3) delete the old SP and create a new modified one, with exactly the identical pwwn/nwwn. and do this one by one !! Otherwise if the time order changes, you are screwed.

4) if you have a updating template, take disk out in the template, and go with 3) acking one after the other.

Yes, we are using sequential access for uuid pools

Yes, we also use that policy.

 

So i will be save with doing the following:

 

1. Change the settings in the SP Template

2. Disassociate the first Server from the template

3. Remove Hard Drive

4. Add the Server to the SP Template

5. Next Server same steps

 

Is that the right order?
