I had a similar issue with a 5508x. Went to a lot of trouble to get a the resistor put in but it wouldn't boot. Was very disappointed. Then I removed the CMOS battery, shorted out the pins.....and presto.....working 5508......
As long as the resistance value is right, any resistor will be ok. It'll depend on your soldering skills, quality of the magnifying glass and whether you can physically get it soldered to the board......
I just tried that trick on a completely dead 5508 (no lights at all)Unfortunately, the result was to restore the orange flashing light of death, but no other function
