Client building a conference room prefers to use Polycom. What is advantage/disatvantage over using Cisco 7937G? Can Polycom desk phones be used in general or should we stick with Cisco SPA? THX

Cisco only provides support for CCA configured systems -- and CCA does not support SIP phones, so it is preferable to use Cisco phones. If you are UC Express certified, you can get support for CLI though.
I should also mention that the UC500's support for SIP phones even in commandline isn't the greatest -- it works, but the system is really designed to use skinny phones.

We are Cisco Select Certified, so I guess that means we can get support for CLI programming from what you are saying?
Can we use the customer's existing Polycom desk phones and planned Conference phone as long as we get initial help? Or will this cause us all sorts of problems? We have always used Cisco phones with UC500!

Not that it is an option in this case, but is it easier to integrate Polycom phones with the larger systems like BE6000? Another consutant we are working with says that the Polycom conference phones are integrated with Cisco phone systems all the time (I assume they are referring to midsize or enterprise deployments)

Absolutely, both Business Edition and full Call Manager have good support for SIP phones.

No, the required certification is the UC Express Specialist certification. Even then, Cisco is generally not "eager" to provide CLI support... the SBCS is really designed around CCA.
CCA cannot be used if you use Polycom SIP phones. (Meaning all configuration must be done in command line)
The UC500 is really not designed for SIP phones... I do not recommend it.

So what I read above is correct, but in the "Real World" one sometimes has to do what is required to make the sale,
CCA does not seem to parse any SIP configurations and I use it along with CLI SIP configurations, I have done this with SPA8000 ATA's as well as Polycom phones, and am able to get Support from Cisco for the system....
In fact that Cisco will support older units that were CLI/CCA configured (grandfathered in)
Below is an example from a production system using a SPA8000 to provide extra Analog ports for various customer functions (3 postal machines, fax etc)

Hi mlemmo,
I think you might be missing the point of what Daniel is trying to tell you... Basically if you make any CLI changes on your system without first having SBCS authorize said changes, you may invalidate your SBCS support contract on the system, the SPA-8000 is a different subject and I believe became an exception to the rule, but even then the support on that was very limited.
The UC-500 was not and is not designed to do a whole lot of SIP, hence why the BE3000 series was introduced and made available for select certified partners, this system is not as polished as the UC-500 is, but I held a lot of hopes for it when it first came out.
I would highly encourage you to listen to what Daniel has said and avoid trying to integrate the Poly into the system, you may bring yourself into a world of pain that you dont want.
And PLEASE...PLEASE...PLEASE do not do this for the sake of getting a sale, this is what makes Cisco Partners look terrible in the market place and is often frowned upon, if something is not "Fit For Purpose" then do not try and make it that way, you will be doing an injustice to your client and potentially putting their business in the firing line of a non functional phone system or at best a semi-functional business.
Please reconsider
Cheers,
David Trad.
