We have a customer interested in the UC540. One key factor is that they are able to add in about 1,000 contatcs into a directory on the UC540. From the phones they would like to be able to access this directory. Is this possible and is there a limit to how many numbers that can be added in?

No, the system supports up to 250 external numbers in the local directory.
However depenging how you need to to (dial-codes, directory search etc), there are other medos like bulk dial lists, and external XML directory services.

Not sure what you mean by bulk dial lists or external xml directories. If it were an external xml directory would the phones be able to search those names and numbers in that directory?

Yes, an external XML directory does that.
See for example my "AD / LDAP .ASP module" at www.ciscoscripts.com
