2802i Capwap process not ready yet. Try after few moments. - solved -

Hi,

one of my 2802i refuses to join my WLC. On console all CAPWAP config commands fail with "Capwap process not ready yet. Try after few moments."

cisco AIR-AP2802I-E-K9 ARMv7 Processor rev 1 (v7l) with 1030592/829416K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID FDW2046D1HK
AP Running Image     : 8.2.20.16
Primary Boot Image   : 8.2.20.16
Backup Boot Image    : 0.0.0.0
2 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces
2 802.11 Radios
Radio Driver version : 9.0.5.5-W8964
Radio FW version : 9.1.7.2
NSS FW version :

Pressing mode button during boot did not help. Other 2802i work just fine with WLC 5508 / Firmware 8.2.164.0. AP

Any ideas on what could be the problem? Or how to erase / reformat / reflash the firmware using u-boot?

Edit: The AP has IP connectivity and is able to ping the WLC

Edit: Seems the Firmware 8.2.20.16 has issues with CAPWAP. A manual firmware upgrade via "archive download-sw" and reboot got the AP to join the controller

Cheers,

Markus

"Capwap process not ready yet. Try after few moments."

With elder AP generations i would have formated the flash in ROMMON and deployed a clean image. With u-boot the documentation is ... missing / hidden in the depths of Cisco ;)

"archive download-sw "did the trick. It seems, FW 8.2.20.16 is having issues with CAPWAP. After manualy deploying the ap3g3-k9w8-tar.153-3.JE.tar archive, the AP joined the Controller

Thanks for all your feedback!

Hi @Peter Tscherner

Try "clear capwap private"

Hi Flavio,

"clear capwap private" doesn't exist:
AP00F2.8B27.AD68#clear
counters Clear statistics counters
datapath Clear datapath counters or drops
logging clear logging

There is a "capwap ap erase" command, but that fails due to "Capwap process not ready yet. Try after few moments." (Even if i wait up to 2 hours....

This command should exist. Are you sure you have a capwap AP in your hands? Can you show the whole output of show version?

At least "sh version" shows Software "ap3g3". Documentation of Mobility Express say: "If AP Image Type and AP Configuration is not available in show version, it means that the AP is running CAPWAP image." As i don't see "AP Image Type" or "AP Configuration" i would assume that i run a CAPWAP image.

Full output of show version is:
AP00F2.8B27.AD68#show version

Yes, this is not ME. This APs X8XX series are different from the rest, they dont have command like debug capwap console cli and clear capwap ...  Looks like Cisco made it more difficult to troubleshooting or there´s some hidden documentation out there.

If you are able to, looks like a RMA is the next step.

Have you tried to apply the command "ap-type capwap"to change it back to lightweight or download an ME image through the command "ap-type mobility-express tftp://tftp_ip/me_image.tar ?

Just Factory reset your AP and try again.

Neither pressing MODE for less than 20 seconds nor for more than 20 seconds on boot made any difference. AP is still stuck with "Capwap process not ready..."

What happens if you just manually set the primary controller on the AP?  (Do you get the same error?)

capwap ap primary-base <wlc name> <wlc ip address>

"Capwap process not ready yet. Try after few moments."
