We have a Cisco Aironet 1830i access point. It has 8.2.100.0 firmware version and we tried to update to 8.5.105.0 and 8.6.101.0. We have created TFTP point and tried updated firmware. Every time we try preimage download starts and attempts several times to complete but never does. We also tried HTTP method and same results.
Let me know if I was missing something. Is there any other method to upgrade firmware?

Is there any reason one would use ver 8.5.x instead of the latest 8.8.x?
I had a difficult time getting v8.8.x as Cisco wouldn't want to unlock the file claiming I didn't have a 'service contract' and that the unit was 'more than 6 months old'. Cisco offered to replace the entire unit back as defective and they'd ship me a refurbish one back. I argued that is crazy as all it needs is a file for a known issue. Reluctantly, they emailed the link to v8.8.x but stated they will close the case and won't support me anymore with this issue.
I don't think it is a ver 8.5.x or 8.8.x problem. It seems the TFTP either has trouble starting or craps out with errors.
(see my next message for more details)

I'm not discussing the "reason" but do believe me when I say "use 8.5.135.0".
Has this AP joined a controller before or not?
If it has, connect a console cable to the AP and reboot. Interrupt the boot-up process and force the AP to boot the primary image.

Firstly, thanks for the quick reply. I was disappointed with Cisco replies, but now have faith in the Cisco community to help each other out.
>bound wrong interface....
I tried it with the IP of my wired (and wireless) NIC that were on the same subnet as the AP. Strange, tftp64 switches back to 127.0.0.1 after a few minutes of inactivity. I was using ver 4.62-64 bit (portable) and tried the 32 bit version 4.52 (portable).
Maybe I shouldn't use the portable versions? What about trying another tftp program? What do you use?
Thanks for the tip about the time. I checked it and enabled the option to fix it, but it still doesn't work.
The first time I tried this morning, the tftp triggered and started working with the CLI link you sent, but it too craps out. I didn't capture that message.
So, I rebooted the AP, reset the time (via GUI), disabled the antivirus and restarted the tftp program and entered the commands in PuTTy. Now I can't get the transfer started. What gets me is the inconsistency. Sometimes the tftp starts and craps out, other times I can't get anything working.
I've blown several days that I can't bill the client. I am tempted to throw out the unit and buy something from a competitor...sigh.
I won't give up yet as I renew faith in this community.

Have a look at the settings window here: https://superuser.com/questions/1205500/how-do-i-correctly-configure-tftp-server-tftpd64
Yours should be configured the same, minus the IP address.
I use this one here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/tftp-server/
Make also sure that the Windows Firewall is disabled.
I would like to see the output from the CLI when you try it the next time, maybe I can see something there.
Regarding the other question about 8.8.111.0 and 8.5.140.0. The 8.8 is newer than the 8.5 feature wise, but the 8.5 version has received many more patches and is a tad more reliable. For this basic upgrade it doesn't matter though.

Thanks for the tips about TFTP settings. Once I changed them to match yours (with my IP), I was able to test CLI and it started working right away. However, it crapped out at the exact same spot as the GUI. I also got the same 'BackedOff' message.
I also tried your idea of disabling the Windows Firewall and left my AV disabled, but it craps out at the same place, ie right at the end of the first file transfer.
I tried rebooting my PC, rebooting the AP (but not yet factor, that is my next test for tomorrow, it is late now).
The settings for TFTP plus the time time were a BIG help as at least I am making some progress.
Now I can't get the TFTP to trigger, I am not sure what happened. It has been a long day and I'll try again in the morning. Strange as I have used the same TFTP program to update several SG500 switches and those always work first attempt.
I tried your idea on my Win7 main desktop. Tomorrow I will try it from my Win10 laptop and my other desktops too to see if maybe I messed up something will this PC.
Thanks for all your help!

I tried it again with just a path of "/" (ie, no "." dot and of course, no quotes), but I got the same error.
I'm enclosing a screenshot of the e:\cisco folder.
I created a folder for the ZIP that Cisco sent me, then I unzipped the big file into the same folder, I unzipped TFTP32 (the 64bit version does the same thing) into the same folder. (Certificate test.txt - that is an idea I had to get around the browser warning, but I gave up on that idea and like your CLI idea better).
Note Tftp shows 100% complete on the Tftp Server tab then disappear but never continues. On the Log Viewer tab, the IP changes to 127.0.0.1 and displays the attached screen. This time, with a path of just '/', I did get different ACK, but it still stops.
For your idea of recovery mode....
I have a PoE injector, so do I connect my PC's ethernet port to the 'Data In' port on my PoE injector? Would I need a cross-over cable? Or should I connect my PC to a switch and then connect the router to the 'Data In' port on injector?
I am tempted to return the entire unit to Cisco. After all, they initially didn't want to send me the link to the firmware update, but offered to replace the entire unit. I figured it would be simpler and faster to update. Boy, was I wrong:)

Normally it's simpler and faster, but you might have a broken unit.
I suggest to attach both devices (laptop / ap) to the same switch which has both ports in the same vlan.
Make sure a DHCP server is running in this VLAN. Do not use wireless on the laptop, disable it.
The upgrade can take 10-20 minutes, did you wait that long (and check the status by entering show ap image all)?
Just checked the manual for version 8.1, there officially is no documented CLI way to upgrade, only the webinterface way:
You might want to try it with the webinterface (use Internet Explorer, accept all certificate messages) again :(
Or honestly, I would RMA it.

I really appreciate all your help and suggestions, but I have no other options but to RMA the unit. I hope Cisco won't give me hassles.
I tried wired connections, disabled Windows Firewall, disabled the antivirus, tried CLI and GUI, tried Win7-Win10-even Linux, tried different PCs and laptops, even tried from a virtual machine with just Windows 7 installed. I tried different TFTP programs, both in 32 and 64 bit versions. I made sure the time was accurate, I checked the MD5 hash of the ZIP file. I waited over 1/2 hour for the TFTP to maybe start up again, but once it crashes, nothing ever happens.
In ALL cases the TFTP stops with errors and the status shows as 'BackedOff'. It starts off saying 'updating' but when the TFTP crashes, it switches to 'BackedOff'.
Unless anyone else has some other idea, I have to give up. I work for my own company and will have to eat a week's income over this problem.
If you are ever in the Montreal area, drop me a note and I'll buy you lunch. I really appreciate all your help!

I didn't know FTP was even an option.
I have used Filezilla many times and didn't think I could do it.
Is there any documentation on the FTP procedure?
I have use Filezilla as a client many times, but I am guessing you meant to setup Filezilla as a server?
The reason I have not tried v8.5.x is I don't have access to it. Cisco wants me to buy a service contract just to access the file.
I'm tempted to get it of the web, but I prefer to do things the official way. And since Cisco offered to RMA the unit, I might be forced to do just that.
