Default route configuration

Tricon
Level 1
Level 1

Hello Folks,

I am following this guide:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/lan-switching/inter-vlan-routing/41860-howto-L3-intervlanrouting.html

I have successfully configured a C3750X switch into a few Vlans, one of which is hosting an Aironet 1142. The C3750 provides IP addresses via DHCP through the Aironet to a client.

I have a router connected to port 48 of the switch

  • The router can ping the switch
  • The switch can ping the router

The client can ping the switch in the 192.168.110.x and 192.168.120.x subnets.

The client can ping the switch port connected to the router 192.168.101.250.

The client cannot ping the router interface. I do not know why. I have tried both a routeable and Vlan based interface between the switch and the router.

Neither of these options work - ping fails from client to router (but works to last hop on switch).

eg:

Tracing route to 192.168.101.250 over a maximum of 30 hops

1   2ms   2ms  3ms  192.168.101.250

If someone could suggest where I need to look to be able to route from the WiFi client to the router it would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Client address I am trying to ping from is:

IP 192.168.110.10/24

GW 192.168.110.1

Hello,

sorry, you mentioned that IP address previously. Either way, make the changes marked in bold to your switch configuration.

Which physical port on the switch is connected to the router ?

Thank you Georg.

The router is connected to Swithport GigabitEthernet 1/0/48

The first bold command worked.

The second did not:

Switch(config)#no ip route 192.168.101.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.101.1
%No matching route to delete

I also tried:

Switch(config)#interface vlan1
Switch(config-if)#no ip route 192.168.101.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.101.1
%No matching route to delete

Output of sh run

This error is likely tied to the last config where I reverted back to L2 to "fix" my routing problem.  More reading.

Hello,

the configuration of the router looks incomplete, you have 'ip nat inside' configured on the interface connnected to the switch, but nothing (no access list) to match ? What if you remove the NAT statement from the interface ?

interface GigabitEthernet0/0
ip address 192.168.101.1 255.255.255.0
--> no ip nat inside
ip virtual-reassembly in
duplex auto
speed auto
no mop enabled

Thanks Georg,

The router is working. When it connects to my HFC modem, the IP is assigned (through GigabtEthernet0/1).

If I connect a computer into the router GigabitEthernet0/0 port then I am able to connect to the internet.

I am trying to move back to my first L3 config but still cannot remove the line

ip route 192.168.101.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.101.1

Hello,

I would suggest to 'wr erase' (then reload) the configurations of both devices and start from scratch, shouldn't take too long. Use the configs below (I took all the redundant stuff out):

Thank you Georg,

I will try this.

I still don't know how you can cut and paste the config and I cannot :-/.

I will also compare your configuration to what I had so I can begin to understand this.

Cheers.

Hi Georg,

Attached is the current config. It is still not working.

I did include some more DHCP ignore addresses however the two configs are as per your guidance.

I have tried a wired interface to remove the wireless, just in case.

Wired Client [192.168.110.11] connected to Switch Port 5

Switch Port 48 connected to Router Port Ge 0/0

From console switch can ping 192.168.101.250 and 192.168.101.1

From console router can ping 192.168.101.1 and 192.168.101.250

Client[192.168.110.11] can ping 192.168.101.250

Client cannot ping 192.168.101.1 {the same error exists}

I don't think there is a problem with either configuration now, they are as per your guidance.

Are there any additional troubleshooting tools in the CLI?

Hello,

add the below static route to your RouterR1:

--> ip route 192.168.110.0 255.255.255.0 GigabitEthernet0/0

Thank you Georg.

This and the switch changes have worked.

I can see now that the problem, was going back from 101 to 110. The router was not able to send the packet pack. Is there any way to monitor traffic to better troubleshoot the problem?

Your persistence is sincerely appreciated.

Cheers.

Hello,

post the full configs of both the router and the switch, as well as the IP address you are pinging from...
