1040 = 2x2 MIMO
1142 = 2x3 MIMO
From the order numbers you've provided the main difference is that LAP means that it's loaded with software to work together with a WLAN controller and AP a is standalone.
Also to mention is that the K in the order number means for Korea.
And the N is non-FCC, for a complete list of the supported country go to ....

AIR-LAP1142N-N-K9 = a WLAN controller Access Point - configuration is done from the controller
AIR-AP1142N-N-K9 = autonomous/standalone Access Point
So if you have a installation with a WLAN controller you need to order the LAP, if you use the AP in standalone mode then the AP
AIR-LAP1142N-N-K9 | 802.11a/g/n Controller-based AP; Int Ant; Non-FCC Cfg |
AIR-AP1142N-N-K9 | 802.11a/g/n Standalone AP; Int Ant; Non-FCC Cfg |

no, it's the same hardware, you could also migrate a AP to a LAP if you load the correct software
