Joining 3802s to a 2504/5508/5520 after it has been on a 9800

denneht
Level 1
Level 1

Scenario:

We rented a building that already has a ceiling full of 9800s.  When we took occupancy, everyone thought the 3802s would join the 5520.  Nope.

I put a borrowed 9800-l online, and APs would join it.  Reconnect them to the network where the 5520 is, and nope.

Took a 3802 and put it on the bench with my 9800 and it joins.  Connected a 3504 and disconnected the9800.  AP joins the 3504.  Connect the 2504, and disconnect the 3504. Nope.  They won't join.

Oddly, I have a few 2504s on the bench and they have 3802s on them.  it is almost as if the 3802 has been on a 9800, the AP won't ever go back to a 2504.

I cannot seem to find anything posted where anyone has this scenario - where they are moving 3802s back down to a legacy controller.

Anyone have a link, or possibly some advice?

Thanks!

We rented a building that already has a ceiling full of 9800s

Cat 9800 WLC not AP

When we took occupancy, everyone thought the 3802s would join the 5520. Nope.

check the matrix and if the right code that should work.  ( do you have any logs to understand from console for this scenarios) ?

Oddly, I have a few 2504s on the bench and they have 3802s on them. it is almost as if the 3802 has been on a 9800, the AP won't ever go back to a 2504.

The given information - different models have different issue as i understand here.

To give right advise, the AP are on Cat 9800 controller you looking to join old AiOS controller ? or other way around.

Any case have you tried reset AP and use option 43 to join the right controller based on DHCP

if they are in same vlan both WLC in same VLAN, it join which ever first response to AP.

where they are moving 3802s back down to a legacy controller.

Legacy controller AirOS - i take it , so you can do manually on the AP to move to Controller use IP or follow above mentioned procedure to join old Legacy controller?

make sure you check the compatibility matrix WLC and AP have right code.

Cat 9800 you have option select the AP and change the primary and secondary controller to OLD WLC IP address and save and reboot.

Yes, ceiling full of 3802s.

Code on 3504 and 2504 are the same.  That part I do not understand.

Previous tenant has the 3802s on a 9800.  We took over and we have a 5520.  APs won't join it.  Won't join a 2504, but will join a 3504.  I put everything on the SAME subnet.  They still will NOT join the 5520, or will they join the 2504.  I was hoping to have them join the 2504 and downgrade the code so maybe then they will join the 5520.

I configured the APs to join the 2504 when I put in the borrowed 9800.  They won't join it.  I put the 3504 on the same subnet, right next to the 2504, and they join the 3504.

I don't know what the problem could possibly be!

All of them running same code - AP and All the WLC ?

AirOS running 8.5.171.0

they join the 3504. - that should work for you, why do you need other WLC controllers ? (is the 3504 run AirOS running 8.5.171.0 ?)

I understand you can not do reset all the AP where they are located, but to understand pull one of the AP and post console logs possible ?

If not you need to Let AP join 3504 and change the config Controller config to other WLC and reload and check ?

as i asked before why do you need 3 WLC controllers different models in the network ? (any reason ?)

Boot the AP and connect a console cable.

Post the entire boot-up process.

Done!  Do you see anything out of the ordinary?

I have two 2504s I am testing with.  One is running 8.5.171.0, and the other is running 8.5.182.7

The AP will not join either one of them.  These are all on the same subnet on the bench.  AP gets an IP address.

The AP will blink green->red, the off.  Then start all over again.  After a while, it will go solid green for a short time, then start the green->red blinking all over again.

Everything is on the same subnet.  The AP will simply not join either one.  But if I connect a 3504, it will.

What is the Regulatory Domain of the AP?

Factory-rest the AP and try again?

Everything US.  Just checked.  Just made sure everything was on same NTP.  All boxes on same subnet.

Regarding factory resets.  The ones in the building are not only above the ceiling tiles, we don't exactly know where they are.  And the building owner does not want us poking around in their ceiling trying to find them.  The one on the bench I can do a factory reset on, however I don't see the need. It will join the 3504 without issue.   It just won't join the 2504.  I have had 3802s on 2504s for several years.  I don't understand why this is happening, and it appears as if it won't join a 2504 only after it has been on a 9800.

 - To be expected in those cases the IOS-XE capwap image is not (or no longer) compatible for downgrade to the 2504 aireos based capwap image ; you need to install the matching software manually on the AP ,

Regarding, "- To be expected in those cases the IOS-XE capwap image is not (or no longer) compatible for downgrade to the 2504 aireos based capwap image ; you need to install the matching software manually on the AP"

I have noticed that when I first had a 9800-L to test with, I could move 3802s between a 9800 and 3504.

I was able to get the 3802 to join a 2504 last night.  The only reason I am trying to use multiple controllers at this point is because the building is remote from me.  I am doing all the testing on the bench here where I am, since it is an hour away.  When I connected the APs on the ceiling to our switch and pointed them to the 5520, they would NOT join.  So now I am testing this on the bench to figure out what could be wrong.  At the building, everything is pingable, APs get IP addresses and try to join the 5520, but don't.  I thought that maybe the code didn't match.  5520 is running 8.5.171.0
