Hello Cisco Community members,

I tried to configure a controller and APs to join the WLC but got this error message on WLC statistics :Layer 3 discovery request not received on management interface.

The APs are on different subnets and have fixed IP addresses on their own subnet. In the controller, I configured a dynamic interface for each subnet. I also used physical port of controller for each dynamic interface.

In the switch connected to the controller and where APs are connected, I configured the port connected to each port of the controller as trunk and port connected to APs as access regarding the vlan of subnet.

Can you help please on the issue?

Are you using option 43 or how are you having the APs figure out what the WLC's IP is?

Thanks for your reply. I am not using dhcp option 43. I just fixed AP's IP addresses and configured vlan on switch. The subnet of the management interface is different with AP's subnet. I configured a dynamic interface with a physical port on same subnet as APs

For testing, would you be able to put one of those APs on the same vlan as WLC management subnet ? I would like to see whether AP register to WLC without any problem ?

Give more detail about WLC model, firmware version, AP model as well. ("show sysinfo" from wlc & "show version" from AP is good)

Hi,

i am also getting this "L3 discovery request not received on management vlan" while checking the not joined stats of access points.

so currently its a mix and match kind of scenario. Some access points have joined the wlc while other are showing this message.

wlc model is 5520 with 8.10.151 and ap model is 9120i. I saw they do have option 43 on dhcp server. So any idea what could be the issue.

AP discover the WLC via L2 if both in same subnet
AP discover the WLC via DHCP op if both in different subnet

so let start are AP get IP from DHCP ?

Yes Ap's and WLC are in different subnets and it seems Aps are getting ip as i can see them while doing show logging. seems something related to timers possibly? do i have to adjust the retransmit timers?
