Hi Mike.

There are four different 1815, (I,W,M and T)

Only 1815I/W/M APs can be ME Masters and can control up to 50 APs in 8.5.

The AP is deliverd with ether Lightweight or ME image. Verify that you order the ME one. (k9=Lightwight , K9C=ME)

Here is the deployment guide for ME 8.5

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/technotes/8-5/b_cisco_mobility_express_8_5/b_cisco_mobility_express_8_5_chapter_00.html

Best regards,

Jonas

Check this document on how to setup ME: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/technotes/8-2/b_Mobility_Express_Deployment_guide/b_Mobility_Express_Deployment_guide_chapter_0100.html

This requires an ME image on the AP. You can order them with either ME or Lightweight image.

For both variant requid, but not all AP can support master mode.

"Only Cisco 1800 series Access Points can be elected as Master APs"

Only, but not all.

Best regards,

Go for 8.5,all the newer versions are still in very early stability states.

No problem,

1700 series APs will still be able to run as subordinate APs. But you do lose 1600 series from 8.7 and upp.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/technotes/8-7/b_cisco_mobility_express_8_7/b_cisco_mobility_express_8_7_chapter_00.html

But I would not go to 8.7 yet, If you need identity PSK or other specific functionalitys you can run 8.6 but if there is no specific reason then I would stay on 8.5 until 8.6 is considered stable.

Jonas
