Mulitcast Group range

Eric Kemsley
Level 4
Level 4

2504 wlc

When I open Controller and on the General page, if I make a change and apply it that change does work. But I get a popup message say Multicast Group address should be in range of 224.0.0.0 - 239.255.225.255.

Do I need to but something in there?

TIA,

Eric

Hi Eric,

The wlc supports multicast/unicast and multicast/multicast. Let me explain what that is. If you select UNICAST in the mulitcast box when a multicast frame arrives at the WLC the WLC will duplicate this frame for each and every access points. This puts a burden on the WLC in large environments.

If you select multicast in the multicast box you need to enter a multicast ip address. This is the range you mentioned. What happens then is your controller will forward the single multicast frame to this m/c group and the router will send the frame to the aps. You will need to make sure multicast is enabled properly on the wired side for this to work.

Does this help ?

What are you setting under the Multicast Group ID?

I generally recommend that you do 239.

That way you can quickly tell that it's the WLC group when you check the mroute

I am not setting anything at the moment. It is there by default and I can not change it to anything other than multicast.

No, it needs to be in the multicast range. If you have a small environment you can likely get away with unicast and not have to worry about it..
