Release or Renew IP from AP AIR-CAP2702I-A-K9

Hello team!

I have 2 APs that got the same IP as other APs, thus they are not joining the WLC.

I try to shutdown and power inline never the ports they connected on, to force them to reboot and get a new IP but they keep their old duplicate IPs. The lease time is 8 days so I can't wait until the AP knows its lease is expiring and try to contact the DHCP again. Is there a way to remotely release or renew its IP lease? Also, I can't ssh on it because it gets me to the 2nd AP with that IP that already joined the WLC. (Or I could release the lease from the good one and maybe the duplicated AP would then join the WLC..?)

The DHCP server is not the router but a central Windows server.

Thanks for your help,

is there any reservation for the AP against MAC and IP ? please check.

shutdown AP port, clear ARP table and DHCP and test it again.

I would first check whether there are duplicate DHCP (rogue) servers in the network. If the design allows you can check the possibility of deploying DHCP/ARP snooping. If the rogue DHCP server is located then disable it and then reboot the AP.
Also check that you have not assigned any static IP to any AP. I would definitely try clearing the bindings after making sure that the none of the APs have any static binding.

If the problem still persisted I would first try assigning a static IP to the AP which you have access to and registered to the WLC, so other AP which you can’t access can continue using the old IP. If the AP is still not reporting to the WLC then I would definitely try resetting it.

What controller and what version of software?

If the AP can't connect to the WLC after a certain number of attempts it should automatically release the IP and reboot in an attempt to re-establish contact with the WLC (unless you're running something very old and buggy).

And I suggest you get that lease time reduced!

Another option - shut down the port the working APs are connected to, then clear ARP cache, then you'll be able to get into the "rogue" APs.
