What's in your wireless toolkit?

What tools/devices do you have for troubleshooting WLAN's? Either installation or day 2 issues.

I have the Wireless Surveyor for a protocol analyzer but for an RF tool I've been considering the AirMagnet. I don't know any other device out there that does it since Fluke took theirs off the market.

I've always thought that when performing surveys you're best off using the actual client device/devices that will be used in the live system (with the 7920 for example, its essential). This is because one wireless device doesn't always behave the same as another for a number of reasons (even though it should be mostly standards based). Having said that, a lot of 802.11b devices do seem to skimp on the RF signal info, so a lot of the time you can't actually survey with them properly.

I have Airopeek for analyzing, although I don't have to use it that much as I've usually found most problems can be found/solved without looking through tiring decodes (unless you get some weird 802.1x phenomena). The Cisco APs are actually quite good these days at giving you a clue what's upsetting them. Generally, look at your APs debug if it's IOS based, and the stats/logs if it's VxWorks.

Regarding a surveying tool, I've said elsewhere that I think the Cisco ACU is generally ok. Believe me, after walking round a customer site with a Laptop and a big screen of numbers for a few days (very big site), the advantages of my Ipaq+CE Cisco ACU become immediately obvious. I recommend an Ipaq + Cisco ACU for CE for surveying 802.11b at least. It saves your arm muscles and you get used to interpreting CE's little quirks as far as the RF goes. As far as surveying 54Mbps goes, I'd like to see more from the Cisco utills, so if anyone has any recommendations on this please tell us!
