No, never had 7.2. Support for the 4400 series was removed in 7.2 (or even 7.1).

Here it's documented: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/crn7_2_111_3.html

Won't work.

2600 supported firmware is 7.2.X.X.

if i upgraded my 4400 to 7.2.X.X would my existing AIR-LAP1252G-E-K9  and AIR-CAP3501E-E-K9  still work?

wlc 4400 being EOL is there a way to download firmware 7.2?

Officially, no.
Once a product has gone past the End of Support date, Cisco removes all documentation(s) and file(s) from the public.

The only way to get the file is to search the internet for the exact filename.

any idea if wlc 4400 even had a 7.2 version to begin with??

You need to do that research... that model is so old, I can't even remember what code or ap's that supported.  Find a used 2504 or maybe even a 3504.  The issue you will have is downloading the images, since a contract is required.
