WLC 5508 migration

Hi,

I have a site that will be migrating from a WLC 5508 to C9800-L, and my question is if the configuration on the 5508 can be migrated to the C9800.

Thanks

Well,  under configuration>services>AireOS Config Translator is an upload routine for the 5508: Please use the AireOS UI or the 'transfer upload' cli to save the AireOS running config

My experience SSID keys did not migrate and apgroup wlans did not match existing interfaces.  I ended up recreating all new 'logical' policy profiles.

Cisco 5508 is built on Aironet platform where as Cisco 9800 built on Catalyst platform. So, you can't directly use the 5508 config file on 9800.

You've 2 options
1. Build 9800 from scratch ( I prefer)
2. Use WLC config converter tool to convert existing AirOS config to Catalyst platform.

Here is the link for Cisco WLC Config Convertor tool: https://cway.cisco.com/wlc-config-converter/

You need "show run-config startup-commands" output or TFTP config backup from 5508 controller to use this tool.

 - Note that when preparing the C9800-L or when configuring operations are nearly finished it is always advisable to check it's configuration using the CLI command show tech  wireless ; then feed the output into : Wireless Config Analyzer
                                Consider this mandatory!

Yes and no.

The 9800 have a GUI to convert the AireOS to IOS-XE but it is not foolproof.

It is better to configure the 9800 from scratch.
