WLC 5508 move

My customer has one WLC 5508 managing about 50 APs on 6  sites.

They will move WLC to a different building at the same site but changing IP addressing for device access.

I am looking for documentation providing best practices with procedure to follow when IP addressing for management interface is required.

I appreciate your support

You dont need to force discovery. As soon as you change the WLC IP address, AP will see it immediatly, they will reload and starting searching for a new WLC.

That´s why is importante to have either DHCP or DNS ready.

I could find a document, but it should be straight forward.

your management IP is also your AP manager so make sure whatever new IP you are moving to is reachable by APs.

make sure sure your option 43 is update in DHCP

make sure your DNS entry to CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER is update.

since this seems like a small deployment, if the users are tied to management interface as well, then make sure your DHCP scope for users are updated.

if you are using ISE or any other radius server for authentication then make sure WLC new IP is added to your radius server.

hope this helps.

Not a difficult task.

A ccess the wlc and change the Management IP address (Do it using a console cable as you can loose connection).  You can do it after the WLC were installed on the new building, of course.

You need to know, then, show Access Points discovery WLC IP address. If they receive the IP through the DHCP option 82, then, you need to change on every DHCP scope the string that represents the WLC IP address.

If AP discovery WLC IP address through DNS resolution, you need to edit your DNS server and change the entry to replect the new IP address.

After that you just need to wait for AP get joined.

First question is this possible to extend the same VLAN and IP address new site, that is quick win.

If you change the controller IP you need to change the AP to new controller AP

Either you reset AP with option 43 to join new controller or issue below command to join new controller IP

capwap ap controller ip address <IP Address>  (thinking you using capwap)

How to Ask The Cisco Community for Help

First at all thanks Ammahend & Flavio for fast answer.

I forgot to add current IP addressing of Management Interface is static.

I have read after I ran "interface address management <addr> <netmask> <gateway>" cli on WLC,  i also have to run

"config wlan disable all"

But after I save configuration, there is another command to force AP discovery?

AP WLC discovery is achieved in a number of different ways.  See:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/8-5/config-guide/b_cg85/ap_connectivity_to_cisco_wlc.html#discover-and-join-controllers

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/5500-series-wireless-controllers/119286-lap-notjoin-wlc-tshoot.html#anc4

I'd recommend DHCP option 43 but it really depends on what is setup in your environment.

Once they've re-joined the new WLC IP check the HA tab settings on the APs (or globally).

If the WLC details are set in there then you'll need to update the IP there too.
