Ask the Expert: Understanding hardware Architecture of NCS 6000

The Cisco Network Convergence System 6000 (NCS 6000) helps enable superior network agility, packet optical convergence, and petabits-per-second system scale. The series facilitates the Evolved Programmable Network to support virtualization and programmability at the lowest total cost of ownership, while delivering high-bandwidth mobile, video, and cloud services to end users.

To add to Nikhil's clarification, please also review the port LED status once the breakout is configured.

LED is green when the ten 10G ports are up

LED is yellow when one or more of the ten 10G ports are down

You may also use the show hw-module location <> | inc slice CLI to see some more information related to the new interfaces after breakout config has been applied. Please also note that the interface numbering scheme changes and we add an extra number as shown in the example that Nikhil provided.

Hi Nikhil,

Could you please shed some light on forwarding at FC. Is it same like CRS?

Thanks,

Ed

Hi Ed,

Thanks for question. NCS6008 can have 6 fabric cards (PID NC6-FC-S) and 5 planes provide full capacity. Performs 2.1 Billion cells per second per fabric ASIC. Each fabric card will have 2 ASIC. The forwarding over fabric is via cells like we do in CRS. Each fabric (Ingress FIA) request the destination fabric (Egress FIA) to send/ pass the cells once the access is granted virtual output queues are established which pass the cells through fabric towards destination. At this stage we start chopping the packets in to cells and finally re-assembled at Egress FIA. Yes this is somewhat same as we have in CRS.

Thanks,

Nikhil
