Clarification on ISSU requirements

James Perks

As a small ISP we are running a number of routers with the following spec.

ASR9006 running 6.3.3 32 bit
Dual A9K-RSP440-SE
Dual A9K-4T16GE-SE

I am trying to understand the requirements to enable ISSU SMU installs and IOS-XR upgrades on the above router.
From my reading so far, we would need to :-

Replace the RSP440 with a 64bit IOS-XR supported RSP, such as the A9K-RSP880-SE
Replace the 4T16GE with a 64bit IOS-XR supported line card, unclear on part number
Upgrade to IOS-XR 64bit (starting from version 6.2.3)

For the 64bit IOS-XR line card the most appropriate for our needs would be the A9K-24X10GE-1G-SE

When looking at the ISSU supported line cards from the following URL, the A9K-24X10GE-1G-SE is not on the list.
The only supported cards have 100/200/400G port speeds. Which is beyond our traffic level requirements.
https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/asr9000/software/asr9k-r6-4/system-management/configuration/guide/b-system-management-cg-asr9000-64x/b-system-management-cg-asr9000-64x_chapter_010111.html

For an upgraded ASR9006 with the following configuration we would be able to run 64bit IOS-XR. But what would the ISSU capability be of the router?

ASR9006 running 6.3.3 64 bit
Dual A9K-RSP880-SE
Dual A9K-24X10GE-1G-SE

What does it mean when a line card does not support ISSU.

Does it mean ISSU will not work at all on the router even if all other requirements are met apart from the line card. Hence a reload will still be needed for example when installing a SMU with ISSU support. Or will the router not require a reload but the ISSU unsupported line card will reload during the install?

Many thanks

Hi James,

in order for ISSU to work you will need to have the entire chassis with ISSU supported hardware.

This LC  A9K-24X10GE-1G-SE does not support ISSU. so if you are to install a reload smu (there are two types, process restart which do not reload the router and reload which do) , the entire chassis will reload as part of the install.

Thanks
