Fail to bootup IOS xRV in ESXi 5.5.0

Hi,

Tried to download Cisco IOS xRV (iosxrv-demo-5.1.1.ova) from website and applied in my ESXi 5.5.0 server. After power on the VM, the console showed "Booting 'IOS XRv" without any further action and no response from console (telnet connection). Any advice?

Thanks!

Paul Au

Hello Paul,

You need to add a serial console to the VM. If you perform some googling there are some blogs around that show you how to configure it and access the serial console.

It is normal behavior that the console is on "Booting IOS XRv".

Hope this works out for you. :)

Hi

Thanks for your reply. I had already added serial port with telnet port but failed to connect from remote SSH client (showed network connection). Is it normal to support "Booting IOS XRv" without further message ? Any log to troubleshoot the cause?

Thanks!
Paul Au

Hi Paul,

You cannot use a ssh client to connect to the telnet service of vmware.

You need to set the ip address of the serial console within the vmkernel interface subnet.

It is normal behaviour that you see the Booting IOS-XRv message on the console (nothing more, nothing less ;))

Hi Wouter,

Thanks for your reply. I used telnet instead of SSH but still cannot work. Serial console's IP address should be same as VM Vsphere management IP address. Right?

Attached is some screen capture for your reference.

Thanks!

Hi Paul,

DeviceStatus: (on your screenshot)

"Connected" must be "niked"

If it stay not "niked" check logs ...

details https://communities.vmware.com/thread/413854

remote serial is VMWARE licensed. Serial ports require Enterprise or Enterprise Plus

see http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/compare (Virtual Serial Port Concentrator)

Kind regards
