issue with feature packages for cisco IOS XR

Hello Cisco Community,

I’m currently facing an issue with my ASR 9901 after booting the ios using USB because the was issue with the local password. , I can’t find essential feature packages like ISIS or MPLS. I’ve successfully booted the router with the required software version (asr9k-x64-usb_boot-7.9.2)

, but when I check for the feature packages, they don’t appear to be installed or available.

Here’s what I’ve tried:

• install the the ISO file using usb flash install asr9k-goldenk9-x64-7.7.2-SPGISO0001.tar
• Attempted to install feature packages manually but encountered errors like "Unknown file download protocol."
• No ISIS, MPLS packages seem to be available after the initial boot.

If anyone has suggestions on resolving this or guidance on how to manually add feature packages after boot, it would be greatly appreciated.

That is expected when you boot using USB or over iPXE reimage.
Where you downloaded the usb iso from should also have a tar file with the packages, each one its own RPM. Take those that you need and put on usb or enable the management port etc to connect to your laptop or server with the files. You should be able to use TFTP and FTP by default, if you have the crypto (k9) package installed then SCP can be used.
We don't boot a full image because 1 it would be much bigger and 2 we don't know what the user needs and don't want to open up protocols that they may not want to use.

Thank you for your explanation. I understand now that the feature packages aren't included by default when booting via USB or iPXE reimage. I appreciate the clarification.

Could you kindly share a document or guide that outlines the detailed steps to resolve this issue, including how to transfer and install the necessary RPM packages? Alternatively, if you're available for a quick Webex meeting (around 15 minutes), that would be extremely helpful to go over the process and clarify any additional questions I have.

Hi Mostafa,

When you perform the USB Boot the router starts only with the mini package installed, which is the minimum for the operating system to work. To install the packages please download the appropriate version from the IOS XR software section, for example the version 7.9.21 attached in the image has the version Cisco ASR9000 64-BIT IOS XR Software or the version Cisco ASR9000 64-BIT IOS XR Software 3DES, once downloaded please copy it to the ASR harddisk and start the steps of a normal upgrade, use the command "RP/0/RP0/CPU0: A9K #install add source harddisk:/file.tar" to add the packages to the inactive repositories, then the "install prepare" and finally the "install activate", in this case during the install add step the router will skip the mini package since you installed it during the usb boot, once you finish installing you can use the command "install commit" to make the changes persistent across reboots. By the way, the router may ask you to reboot after installing the packages, but this is not common since you already have the mini installed.
