RSP880 No Boot After migration to eXR

Hello,

I recently upgraded an ASR 9904 using the following guide:
https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/asr9000/migration/guide/b-migration-to-ios-xr-64-bit/m-migration-overview.html#id_33482

After starting up the eXR software, the console output stops at the following message and becomes unresponsive. I left the router for 8 hours, but nothing changed. After rebooting, it reaches the same point. It seems that the console no longer provides any additional output after this point, even though the other line cards appear to have booted successfully (status: green).

Any insights on this issue?

Hello  @ez9 ,

if my understanding is correct you only have issues with the console port  on the RSP   and  all linecards are working after the  upgrade ?

>>ima_policy have loaded, or IMA policy file does not exist

it looks like this policy is missing look  for error messages  on IOS XR 64 bit

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/asr9000/migration/guide/b-migration-to-ios-xr-64-bit/m-difference-32-bit-and-64-bit-os.html

is  user traffic processed by linecards?     can you SSH to your device  in band?

if not open   a SR  with  Cisco TAC

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hello @Giuseppe Larosa ,

Thanks for the answer. I managed to get access to the console of the sysadmin-vm via the aux port of the RSP and the errors that I am getting are the following:

inst_agent[4255]: %INFRA-INSTAGENT-4-XR_PART_PREP_REQ : Received SDR/XR partition request. Looking for available matching partition. If not found, new one will be created after copying relevant image and RPMs
0/RSP0/ADMIN0:Feb 6 15:18:29.631 UTC: inst_agent[4255]: %INFRA-INSTAGENT-4-XR_PART_PREP_RESP_ERR : SDR/XR partition preparation has failed
0/RSP0/ADMIN0:Feb 6 15:18:29.631 UTC: sdr_mgr[4277]: %SM-SDR_MANAGER-3-MSG_VM_RESOURCE_ALLOCATION_ERROR : Failed to allocate resources for sdr (SDR NM: Install partition preparation failed for sdr default-sdr)

show sdr

Location IP Address Status Boot Count Time Started
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
0/RSP0/VM0 192.0.4.4 PARTITION_CREATION_FAILED 0 00/00/0 00:00:00

I don't know if these errors are correlated with my problem. I rolled back to classic ios-xr and everything working OK. So, I suppose that there is no hardware error. Maybe I miss something with the order of operations?

Hello  @ez9 ,

the hardware is ok read carefully the section about the differences  between classic 32bit XR and 64 bit linux based XR

GiuseppeLarosa_0-1739046316816.png

and:

>>  Console port directs to the XR VM. Aux port directs to the Sysadmin VM

a possible  issue for the errors  is lack of free space  to create the  partititon.

As I  have written in  my first post  you can collect the logs and you can open  a case  if the device is covered by a contract

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Yes these errors are related. The XR VM is not accessible because the creation of the XR partition failed.

What was the 32-bit version and 64-bit versions you used for the migration?

Any other console logs from sysadmin you can share?

Thanks,
Sam
