Tomahawk and Typhoon on IOS-XR 64-bit

XR fam,

 

We have a few ASR 9006 chassis that are currently running some MOD-80s (Typhoon) for 1- and 10-Gig MPAs plus some 100G line cards (like the A9K-1x100GE-TR). Some of the 100G line cards have 40-kilometer ER4 optics in them (CFP-100G-ER4). We are trying to budget for some line card upgrades and plan on using MOD-200 (Tomahawk) blades with 100G MPAs (like A9K-MPA-1x100GE or A9K-MPA-2x100GE). According to Cisco's optics compatibility matrix, the 40-kilometer optic that works in those MPAs is the CFP2-100G-ER4. Also according to that matrix, that optic requires 64-bit IOS-XR code. We've seen mention in other documentation that Tomahawk and Typhoon line cards will not work in the same chassis on 64-bit code. Is this true? Will we need to upgrade all of our MOD-80s to MOD-200s for our 1- and 10-G ports in order to use those CFP2-100G-ER4 40-kilometer optics? We wanted to verify with the community that this is a hard-and-fast caveat, or if there are exceptions.

i did some more checking internally. this is working on cXR and is supported on 32bit after 6.0.1 code

i misinterpreted the note on the page. essentially if you are running 32bit the minimum release is 6.0.1 to recognize the optic.

 

however if you are planning to run 64bit, you must have 6.3.2 or higher

for compatibility you can check this tool. for the mod200 64bit XR is required. please see the note listed

the typhoon based cards cannot run eXR, only Tomahawk or higher.

To clarify this situation, as long as we don't run the 100G-ER4 optic, we will be okay with a 9006 with RSP-880's, a MOD-80, and a MOD-200 running 32-bit 642?  This specific optic is the only thing that would require moving to 64-bit, which then eliminates using a MOD-80.

 

If that's the case, can you provide the reason this optic is unique in that requirement?
