NTP Server configuration.

Hi folks,

Just to clarify my doubt.

I have 2 Routers on which I have configured NTP server which is taking NTP source from Windows server. On VG, I can see NTP is synced with Windows Server.

I want rest of my CUCM, CUC, CUIC and Finesse serevrs to sync with Router time. So, do I need to enable command #ntp master 1 on both Router's to get this achieved?

Windows Server: 192.168.35.155 / 192.168.35.166

Router1: ntp server 192.168.35.155

ntp 192.168.35.166 prefer (Secondary NTP if Primary goes down

Router 2: Same as Router 1.

Please suggest.

thanks & regards,

Ritesh Desai.

Hi

what you have is right but prefer makes it the primary

ntp sever x.x.x.x prefer --this makes it the primary NTP server

ntp x.x.x.x

The check show ntp status make sure its synced right

Above is the CUCM syntax. On CUIC, CUC and Finesse, server asked me by removing the NTP server would invalidate license and would need to rehost the licenses.
On CUCM, CUIC and CUC I see the License expiry date is PERMANENT. I dont see any issue. Earlier, NTP was registered with 192.168.35.91. Is there any license issue.
Please suggest.

CUCM, CUC as of version 9.X no longer uses parameters such as NTP, IP address, etc. to generate MAC address used for license, it uses the MAC of the ELM/PLM server, so you can safely change NTP on these nodes.

CCX/Finesse still uses the old school hash based on parameters one of which is the NTP server, so once you change the NTP server 1 your MAC license will change as well.

Refer to the link for how CCX MAC license is constructed:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cust_contact/contact_center/crs/express_9_02/installation/guide/UCCX_BK_U096815B_00_uccx-install-and-upgrade/UCCX_BK_U096815B_00_uccx-install-and-upgrade_appendix_0111.html

Dear Chris,

Thanks... While changing the NTP Cisco VOS notified that license would be in-validated and need to re-host. I said Yes and it gave me goosebumps. Servers were not synchronizing. So i raised the discussion.

So, I check on CUCM, CUC, CUIC and Finesse, these servers are synced with NTP (Cisco IOS).

The notification creates confusion in minds of new users.

Thanks to you @Chris Deren and @Mark Malone.

Thanks & Regards,

Ritesh Desai.

Hello.

I need remove Secondary NTP in UCCX and CUCM because it is no longer in operation.

Question: This movement causes error in Licensing and wold have to do a rehost of licenses?

Using ntp master is an often confused command. This does not turn the router into an NTP server. Rather, it tells the router to sync the time to itself, but to do so considering it as a stratum 1 NTP server. So, unless you mean to do that, which I don't think you do, since you are syncing to windows time servers, just leave that command out. I would guess that ntp master is more often than not, used by accident, and should be avoided.
