So I have the same issue on CUCM & Unity Connection servers in one site. creating a Backup Device fails with this error :-
"Update failed : Unable to access SFTP server. Please ensure the given SFTP server is a genuine SFTP server"
I am using Filezilla SFTP on a win2008 server on the network. I have created my SFTP user, disabled the Windows Firewall. I can access the SFTP server from a cmd prompt on my laptop which is on the domain so I know the server is up & listening fine. Both CUCM & Unity Connection can ping the SFTP server.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Paul.
Make sure that Cisco Unified Communications Manager is running. In a cluster, make sure that Cisco Unified Communications Manager is running on all servers in the cluster. To back up data to a remote device on the network, you must have an SFTP server configured. The following SFTP servers are supported and recommended, but you may use any SFTP server:
•Open SSH (for Unix systems, refer to http://openssh.com)
•Cygwin (refer to http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/, or http://ipc-platform-team.cisco.com/index.cgi/DrfInfo/faq) ;
•freeFTPD (Currently not supported due to a file size limitation of 1GB)(refer to http://www.freeftpd.com/?ctt=download, or http://ipcbu-cap.cisco.com/tips/SFTP%20server.html)
•TitanFTP (http://www.webdrive.com/products/titanftp/index.html)
•In addition to the free sftp servers mentioned below, GlobalScape is the commercial SFTP Server that have been certified with Cisco through the Cisco Technology Developer Partner program (CTDP). More info refer to http://www.globalscape.com/gsftps/cisco.aspx.\\
Hope it helps.

Thanks Anand, yes CUCM is running and has been for a couple of months.
Although the documentation lists other SFTP servers I have used Filezilla succesfully many times in the past (on previous versions of CUCM) and I can access the SFTP from my laptop so I know the SFTP server is working fine (the successful logon attempts show up on the SFTP console).
I don't get any access attempts logged on the SFTP console from CUCM or Unity however.

Can you post a screenshot of what your backup device settings look like??
Most of the time the issue is with the path being used not matching what you have on your SFTP server.

Yes of course .....
I have used both ./ (the unix way) and / (for windows). The SFTP is running on Windows2008R2.

Hi Paul,
If you are pretty sure that the sFTP server is setup correctly, and you can access the sFTP server via WinSCP. Check the permission of the folder, make sure the sFTP server user can write to that folder. Sometimes the "permission problem" that creates this issue.
Hope it helps,
Anand

Could you already solve the problem?
If not please show me a "show hardware" from the cli of the publusher
