IP Phone types

Hi guys,

A couple of Qs re: IP phones.

1. Is there any real difference between the 79xx and the 79xx G series phones?

2. I understand there is more functionality on an old 7940 than a 7912G but the 7912G seems to be more expensive?? I got this from browsing a few reseller websites.

Kane, sorry this is off your topic but I am having some issues here and need help..

It has to do with customizing the background image for 7970 phones...I have promised the client this functinality and I cant seem to get it to work..

This is the erro I get when I issue the debug tftp commnad

Try taking the / off the TFTP server command

I have done that too...AT some point..The router loads the List.xml file howeevr, it does not load the .png files.. This is the case now

1. No, only buttons change with G model we have an icon instead of labels (directories, services, settings, vm)

2. Im not a sales expert but I found only 7940G models in an internal price page, 7940 model doesnt appear, so I guess those phones are not being sold anymore, 7912G still appears

Ans: G means Global, you can have different language sticker at the phone for messages, directories, services, settings ect button.

Ans: 7940 and 7912G are just for different purpose of usage. Functionlity wide, they pretty much same.

The price 7940 should be more expensive than 7912G, Here is the listing price without discount:

CP-7940= --> I dont think Cisco sell anymore

CP-7940G= $315.00

CP-7912G= $245.00

Ans: 7941G and 7961G has a higher-resolution compare the 7940G and 7960G. And the side button can be lit also, the old model does not.

Hi Kane,

Like the others have noted, the G designation indicates the Global Icon rather than the old English Hard Key Labels that were installed on the base 7940/7960 models. Both the 7940 and 7912G are EOS/EOL the difference being the support for the 7912 continues for about 5 years for Hardware (2012) and 3 years for Software (2010). This probably explains the price difference $$ Have a look;

EoS/EoL phone models have English hard key labels. New models (G) replace English hard label keys with universal icon labels.

Sorry I missed your second question :) The main difference between the 7940G/7960G and the 7941G/7961G are the "backlit" line keys and upgraded displays that are on the newer 7941G/7961G and not on the 7940G/7960G. We have many of all 4 models deployed in our environment and our users much** prefer the 41G/61G models. Have a look;

The Cisco Unified IP Phone 7941G provides two programmable backlit line/feature buttons (these line keys now change color depending on the status of the call ie: Ringing,Hold,Idle **Very nice feature**) and four interactive soft keys that guide a user through call features and functions, and audio controls for high-quality duplex speakerphone, handset, and headset. A built-in headset port and an integrated Ethernet switch are standard with the Cisco Unified IP Phone 7941G. The phone also features a ***best-of-class large, higher-resolution grayscale pixel-based LCD ***. The display provides features such as date and time, calling party name, calling party number, and digits dialed. The graphic capability of the display allows for the inclusion of higher value, more visibly rich Extensible Markup Language (XML) applications and double-byte languages.
