On the IP Phone, if the user wants to search the corporate directory, they hit the Address Book button, select 2 for corporate directory, and then start typing the person's first or last name.
However, to type the last name of "Smith", they have to press 77776444844
That's very annoying. On our prior old system (not cisco), the phone would automatically find the best matches. Is this the only option on a cisco phone system, or is there a way to change this?
Using this system this way feels like how texting used to be on the old flip phones

Yes, that's how the built-in directory works, it's an xml app that will show you results based on what you submit, but does not take every input and goes back to the directory to try to match it.
Not sure if any 3rd party directory option does that.

Estelle,
Your users dont need to type the whole smith (just sm should do) and smith should be returned as part of the matches
