UCL and VG248

Matt Cable

Could someone provide guidance if we upgrade the current cluster (version 6) to version 9 replacing the current licensing model from DLUs to UCL.

I just wanted to understand if the VG248 now needs to be licensed under UCL (essential) or whether it still takes the 'Gateway' view where there is no cost associated.

Any help will be appreciated as it's difficult to tell from CCO.

Thanks in advanced

Matt

Hey folks,

I just thought I would jump in here as I LOVE licensing

discussions +5 to both Barry and Chris for their great info

here!

Here is an actual clip from a Cisco doc that no longer exists;

Device License Units (DLUs) are required for each device provisioned  in Cisco Unified Communications Manager. Each provisioned device  consumes some number of DLUs from the total licensed in Cisco Unified  Communications Manager, based on the type of device and whether it is an  Adjunct Device or not.

After determining how many devices will be provisioned in your system, see the table below to

identify how many DLU's are required.

Device Type - Cost in DLUs

Cisco VGC Phone (Voice Gateway Controlled, e.g. behind VG248)

Cisco VGC Virtual Phone (Voice Gateway Controlled, e.g. behind VG248)

LIC-CM-DL-10 Unified CM Device License- 10 units

LIC-CM-DL-100= Unified CM Device License - 100 units

LIC-CM-DL-500= Unified CM Device License - 500 units

LIC-CM-DL-1000= Unified CM Device License - 1,000 units

LIC-CM-DL-5000= Unified CM Device License - 5,000 units

To me, this says, if no DLU licenses are required, that can only mean

that you've already paid for them as part of the hardware bundle.

You shouldn't have to pay twice for the same license

Have a look at this thread and the answer from Mahesh @ Cisco;

https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/1083828#1083828

And see the attached "Cisco provided - license unit calculator" and I think we'll see the

same 0 DLU's for analog devices;

We currently have 10 VG248's in use and are planning our upgrade to

9.x so this will definitely bite us as well........UGH

Cheers!

Totally agree Rob... especially when I've sat in a meeting with a Cisco rep and he stated exactly the same thing.....
