I have to create a couple user accounts in UNity Conenction to allow the user to be searchable via the auto attendant. My question is can I create an account in Unity Connection (7.1.3b) without creating a mailbox? I have a couple users that need accounts, the phone accounts are just going to then be forwarded to outside DIDs so they dont actually need Voicemail boxes in our system.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks

Hi Luke,
You can create Contacts without any regard to your current LDAP config

Hey Luke,
I'll just add an example to the good tips from Yosh (+5 "Y")
In my test I'm using 8600 as the newly created "Contact" in CUC
If I dial our main AA I can find 8600 in the voice enabled directory, and
I can also find 8600 via a dial by extension directory but without
changing the active greeting setting;
Allow Transfers to Numbers Not Associated with Users or Call Handlers
and the Default System transfer restriction table I can't direct dial 8600 from AA
So I must adjust the Default System transfer restriction table as below;
The top most rule in our Default System transfer restriction table is
9??????????*
and is blocked on our system
But if I add 86??* above it in the table;
86??* - allow
This now allows transfers (direct dial) to the 86xx range of numbers even if they do not have a mailbox
on Unity Connection
Cheers!

Yes, you can do that, when you build them you have option to create user with or without mailbox.

Luke you can create a user without a mailbox but please note that you will not be able to assign an extension to this user.
To create a new user select "New User" and under the user type select "User Without Mailbox"

Hi Luke,
If you want to have people that can be searched via the voice-enabled or dial by name AA but don't have a mailbox on the systemyou can set them up as Contacts in Unity Connection which doesn't require any
licenses and can be used to route calls off-box as well
Cheers!

Luke,
What Rob said is a better option then creating a user. I would go with his recommendation.

Excellent, thanks for all the responses. Does it matter at all that we are synced with our LDAP servers?

No, it does not matter as in UCON you can build non-LDAP users or contacts.

So one last one, if I create the account "user without mailbox" they are then searchable via the AA, but there is no extension associated to their account so how could someone dial them off the AA?

Luke,
You shouldn't create a user without a mailbox instead create a Contact and you can put the phone number of that contact under "Transfer Extension".

Getting closer! I am now able to hear the users name in the AA by searching for it, however, if I hit the AA and press the extension "7445" hit says "I do not recognize that as a valid extension" Ughhhh
any ideas? thanks

Hi Luke,
Under the active Greeting for the Call handler can you check;
Cheers!

Thanks, that did make a difference, unfortunately it still doesn't work. It now says "You cannot be transferred to this number, check the number and try again"

Luke,
Have you verified the "Restiction Table" in Unity for "Default Transfer" to allow calls to be dialed out of Unity?

Yosh

I have not, though I will cehck that in a minute. I have a few other accounts just like this one, but for the sake of making them work, I went ahead and created them a Unity VM mailbox, even though they wont use it since the calls just gets forwarded out of our system. If I create them a VM mailbox, the call works fine, it just seems like a waste of resources and licenses.
